Fragger grenade cancel abuse and a simple solution

(Gh0st1e) #1

First and foremost this isn’t a Fragger bashing thread as I believe Fragger’s guns/ability/health are perfectly balanced for his intended use.

The problem:

As of late I have noticed a large influx of people abusing Fragger’s grenades by cooking then canceling them last second and repeating the process until they come across an enemy where they toss the cooked grenade and instantly kill said opponent with little to no time to react.

On top of this, Fragger has enough health to soak up damage while cooking a grenade so timing isn’t even that important as long as the Fragger jumps around for a second to throw off his opponents aim.

The solution:

Considering that Fragger’s grenades will explode in his hand when over cooked, grenade canceling shouldn’t be possible to begin with so my suggestion is too remove grenade canceling outright. This results in no impact to Fragger’s performance and will prevent these cheap kills without the risk of wasting a grenade.

Questions, comments, and suggestions are appreciated.

Grenade canceling is a viable tactic, especially when going around corners that you don’t know there are enemies around. I have yet to see somebody use grenades in the way that you described, as Fragger is currently the best merc for duels because of his health and weapon selection. Using your gun against a single opponent is generally a good idea instead of wasting a grenade.

That’s just the problem I’m describing. Why should a Fragger be able to come around a corner with an already cooked grenade and not suffer a penalty for not needing to use it?

Maybe he should be hit with a reduced cool down like Skyhammers airstrike?

Other mercs suffer penalties for similar behavior or cannot cancel at all.

Why in general should he have an indoors arty strike without suffering any penalty for using it?

If you grenade cancel, then you get a cooldown of half the normal.

That’s strange…I tested this the other night and didn’t see any CD for canceling. I have Fragger but don’t play him anymore so I guess I just managed to get a bug the one time I decided to play as him.

Cooked grenades in general are a problem, but unfortunately Fragger’s use in the meta would go to shit without it. It’s a necessary evil we need in the game.

As somebody said, you get increased cooldown if you cancel so it’s evident splash damage thought of this problem

I’m a Fragger main and I didn’t even know about this.

IIRC there’s another merc which can cancel an ability for 1/2 of the cooldown. Not sure which. Maybe it was Fragger after all.

This used to be an issue, but not any more. Your nade goes on a half cooldown if you cancel now.

(SpectraBlitz) #11

As others have said, cancelling a primed frag will give you a short cooldown before you can start cooking another. IIRC its around a 10 sec CD.

I disagree. Priorities can change at an instant and committing to throw the grenade should not be forced upon the player because (whatever). If you see a Fragger cooking his grenade grenade, insta-kill him and he’ll gib himself.

This function of cooking grenades and canceling game has existed since the dawn of grenades in FPS games…
