FPS Less Than Previously

(Wolvengaming) #1

So not sure what has caused it, but my in-match (As in controlling my character) FPS has taken a significant hit.

With Vsync off and while streaming to Twitch, I used to have to go into the .ini files and set the max FPS to 160 so as to leave room on my CPU to stream to Twitch on a semi-high quality level since DB used to use a significant amount of my CPU.

However, while DB seems to use less CPU now for whatever reason (Not complaining there), my FPS in-match seems to fluctuate pretty often anywhere from 80-180 FPS. This is with no frame smoothing and Vsync off. For comparison I used to get 240-260 FPS on high settings without streaming.

These values change slightly depending on what advanced video preset I have on.

Minimum: ~120-160 with occasional dips below 80. Especially right at as my character spawns.
Super: ~100-140, again with the same dips, except now to around 60.

Have been watching my CPU usage while in game and it seems that while loading any part of the game, CPU usage will be used properly; in the sense it will peak at ~90-100% usage. However once in match, it seems to hover right at 25% overall usage and occasionally deviates from that. (Side Note: Processors #1,3,5,7 seem to be underutilized by quite a bit; labeled 0-7)

Also, every time I alt tab, when I tab back into the game, CPU#0 and CPU#1 seem to switch loads.

GPU usage rarely goes above 10%.

I’ll list FPS in the different menus:
Main Menu: ~1500 - This is the only time my GPU seems to get actually used. Sits at ~50% usage.
Between Match Menu: 350 - This seems like a hard cap?
Match in progress and at Merc Select: 180-240

OS: Windows 10 64-bit
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz (8 CPUs) 4.4GHz OC
Memory: 16GB RAM
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB x2 (I have tried SLI but only seems to slightly smooth FPS, minimal gain)
GPU Version: 10.18.13.5906

Ultimately seems like the CPU just isn’t being utilized as it should be.

tl;dr: My CPU fans are getting bored and my GPUs are just helping to make sure a strong wind doesn’t knock my tower over.

Thank you for posting this, I have a similar setup as your’s, but with a i7-5820K.

I’ve done a bunch of testing with Config files, checking to make sure all hardware and drivers are properly installed/ updated, and everything is in place.

On a GTX 980 TI, you’d think Dirty Bomb would run smooth as a whistle, yet it doesn’t.

I’ve made sure to perform testing on other games to make sure it isn’t my system/ setup.

On the GTX 980 TI I’ve run the following games:

  • Witcher 3, Ultra settings all set and I run around 80-90 FPS constant.
  • League of legends, although not graphic intensive, it still held a stable 250fps which I set a cap at to ensure the testing stayed consistent.
  • CSGO 250FPS locked and doesn’t even move from manual capping.

I currently run Dirty Bomb on my potato config (MINIMAL SETTINGS), yet I can only hover between 70-100FPS, and can’t even capp higher on the GTX 980 TI Rig.

Here is the thing, I have a 2nd rig, definitely more than capable to run any of the games i’ve listed in my testing. The 2nd rig has x2 GTX 770, although when I dirty bomb, I do not run SLI and run only one GTX 770 while playing.

With the same config file I use on my rig with the GTX 980 TI, the rig with the GTX 770 gets constant 135-150fps and you can feel the performance gain since i run both rigs on Benq monitors @ 144hz.

Both rigs have all drivers and hardware set in place properly, the only difference now between the two rigs is this.

GTX 770 system runs on - Windows 7 64-Bit Ultimate
GTX 980 TI system runs on - Windows 10 64-Bit Home.

I think the culprit here is Windows 10, although games with bigger studios are optimized, games like DB just aren’t. I play on a competitive team so unfortunately I will need to downgrade from Windows 10 to 7 on the rig running the GTX 980 TI b/c I can’t justify having spent $5000+ on a new setup, and not be able to run a game my 2.5 yr old computer can.

Once I do the downgrade, I will let you know about the performance gain, if any.

one more note, my team mate also runs the same GTX 770 x2 setup as my 2nd rig, and has the exact same performance as my GTX 770 setup at 130-150 FPS constant, which he runs on Windows 7 as well.

FIXED!!!

So, if you haven’t unparked your cores using a 3rd party app, do it.

I was getting 60-100fps struggling on my GTX 980Ti as you are.

Used this app http://coderbag.com/Programming-C/CPU-core-parking-manager

All I did was turn the CPU usage for my cores up to 90% constant load, guess what. Frames are 200-300 minimum.
