Forum Achievements Idea

(Fluffy_gIMp) #1

Hello Folks,

we are toying with a few crazy ideas of adding forum based awards/achievements (see mock-up attached), and were looking for thoughts and feedback.

We’d like for it to be automated, the plugin that we’ve seen closest to what we want is this:
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=187600
seen in action here:
http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/awards.php

Anyhow thoughts/suggestions/assistance appreciated…

i dont think we need awards. if you make some then make them small or on another site but not in the avatar or whatever.

a forum is there to write and read. this shall stay in foreground.
perhaps add the awards in a kind of quick-help window… i dunno english words for that.
it is when you drag your mouse over a link and then the link is explained…
so the awards are only shown if you wanna do more than writing and reading.

Well in my mind, i like the idea, its nice

(stealth6) #4

depending on what you get awards for… might be nice

(kamikazee) #5

Oh noes, more XP-spam!!!111!!!one!!!

Ahem…
It could be nice seeing how “karma” systems tend to weed out extreme or noisy posters, but I think it might turn this forum more into “groups of people”.

Also, for the benefit of the community, the rules for getting achievements should be clear to the point we can rehearse them out loud (figure of speech, of course).

To give an ET:QW example, I still wonder what sites qualify as a community site to join the “Global Volunteer Force”. Is this spelled out somewhere or is this invitation-only? (Note: I don’t run an ET:QW site nor contribute to the scene at this moment, so I don’t qualify whatsoever. I’m just fuzzy on the rules.)

But generally, I’m against awards seeing how they clutter my view of the world, ehr, forum.

(shagileo) #6

Well I was about to say the same thing.
People are going to post and post just to get an award. This way posts can go really offtopic (cough).

On the other hand, I think there are enough “mature” posters on this forum who only post to help.I like the fresh ideas, though I just stay neutral on this one.

sure, why not
sounds like fun

Sounds cool to me, I guess the trick with the awards is not to make them all simply post based.

A few ideas that spring to mind:

Loyalty Award - Based on length of time registered
Helper Award (gold, silver, bronze) - Link into the reputation system, such that it is user rated
Xbox LIVE Leader board Rank medals
Golden Tapir - Secret Award (maybe using an obscure word in a post?!?)
Show Off Award - Completing all the fields in the User profile page
Ugly Award - Adding a photo the user profile page.
Smilie Artist Award - creating a new smilie for the forum that gets accepted

You could also give special unique awards like SD run competitions.

Anyone else got any ideas? I’m all out for now

Those are some great ideas i like them  Especialy the Helper award, i have never seen that done before

(isbowhten) #10

ok make the awards but make that you have to open a new window to show them that none of them disturbes the writing/reading the forum is made for

(shagileo) #11

Well it seems to me those rank boxes are quite small and won’t be really anoying to other forummembers.
Maybe it is a fun add afteral. There’s nothing wrong just to test it. You can always shut it off when things get nasty

(shagileo) #12

Any more news about this Achievements idea ?

(Fluffy_gIMp) #13

Thanks for feedback folks, judging by the responses it seems like there is a general positive vibe towards the idea, so we will start pushing ahead.

If there are any vbulletin savy programmers that want to lend us a hand with it, then please shoot me or Badman a PM. :stroggbanana:

The lovely Salteh has already offered his support, but the more the merrier

And again if you’ve got any cool ideas for awards (thanks CleaverDancer!) , stick 'em in this thread…

As a side note for those that didn’t want to participate in the system I’m sure we could put in an option such that you could turn it off.

(kamikazee) #14

Hmmm… Ok, it might be worth trying.
You guys still have plenty of time to evaluate it when it is up and running.

I wonder though how “turning it off” would work.

Life will find a way

(isbowhten) #16

it is enough not to display it instead of turning it off :stuck_out_tongue:

(stealth6) #17

just put like a + on the top, and in the profile you can put default show or not show, then if they put it off, and then want to see it later afterall they click the + to display info

(Pegazus) #18

Bump!!

Any news about this? Just curious.

(Salteh) #19

Yes! Working on stuff!

(Pegazus) #20
