Forest SP Map

(The Duke) #1

Hi Guys, I tried using bspc to decompile the forest.bsp map, but it’s missing lots of brushes like normal, I really want to try to replicate one house with the fire place from that map, and one of the sniper towers, I was hoping maybe you guys at splash, could maybe give me the dimensions of them so I could really try to recreate it, or maybe a map file with just the house and tower in it, don’t know if that is possible thou. I have made some of my own but they are way off, and like to see if I could get it closer to the games version.

Thanks In Advance

The guard towers are 160x160 at the base, 128x128 at the top of the wooden supports and 552 high including the top section. The wooden support structure is 388 units high. The main wooden supports are 16x16 at the base and angled up towards the top. The cross supports are 8x8 thick and spaced at intervals of 128 units. The upper roof section is 168 units high.

The most important part about the guard towers is to get the wood support beams the right thickness. Otherwise it looks really wierd and off scale.

The house with the fireplace is fairly simple and uses the scaling from the textures to create the house to the correct size.

The door frame is (village/villdoor_c04dm) and the windows are (village/villwin_c05dm). Most of the textures are from the village set.

Thanks for your help! I’ll let you know my outcome

ok, I decide to start with the house first, and wanted to ask a few questions about, I understand this stuff pretty well, though there are a few mostly basic things I would like to understand better.

when you said use the scalings from the textures to get the house to the correct size, this is what i did, I looked at both the villdoor_c04dm, villwin_co5dm in paint shop, and they are 256 x 256 so I created 2 brushes each 256 x 256, and then just fit the textures to the brushes with gtkradiant, looks good to me, just wanted to see if that was correct. And second with the 2 end brushes for this main side of the house, I think the texture being used is vill_co2dm.jpg, his pic is also 256 x 256, but when I create a brush for that size it just looks way to big, compared to the screen shot I’m looking at, if figure the size of this maybe should be 128 x 128 ? and then maybe need to play with the texture to fit the brush, or is there a better size to use just to fit it to the brush?

How thick should my walls be, my right now are 8 units thick, i’m think maybe about 16?

my last question is about the door and windows, in the game, there is no door or windows, just the stone frame is displayed so you can walk in, or look out a window, how do you edit this to open them up, I noticed that these textures are jpg’s, and don’t have alpha channels in them to be used in the shadder file, at least I don’t think so. I think only the tga files have alpha channels.

Thanks Again For Helping Me Out!

sock,

I think I figured out my first question, for the 2 end parts of the front of the house, I first created a brush 256 x 256, then used the vill_co2dm texture, and fit it to the brush, then I resized the brush to 128 x 256 and it looks that same as my screens shots from the game.

hi, I decided to try making the guard tower while waiting to hear back from you about the house, I could use some more dimensions for the tower, its coming along pretty good, I was looking at the roof, and it looks like you used 4 3 sided brushs, and need the height for them, think the should all be the same size. also the four smaller posts that support the roof, I built them 8 x 8, and need the height for them. also need the height for the small walls going around the floor of the tower, and for the house, need height and thickness of the fire place, on the out side, when you get a chance. Really appreciate your help on this project.

Thanks Again,

All unit measurements are from the editor. The guard tower top section is 176 units high (Top of roof to bottom of wood floor)

The roof is 64 units high with a 8 unit lip below. The main wooden supports are 92 units high and the floor is 4 units thick.

The side panels are 36 units high including the floor height. They are made from the bottom section of the (miltary_wall/miltary_m01) texture.

Seems like you have got the house right and used the texture height right. (Its 256 pixels but 128 map units) Sorry my previous post was so confusing but I assumed you knew that all textures are half in dimensions because of texture scaling.

The house roof is 136 units high and at 45 flat degree angle. Not like the roofs in village which have a nice concave angle. The steps outside are 60 units high and the rest of the house has a likewise foundation in similiar dimensions.

The inside of the house has a nice cross timber support in the roof space with 16 unit wood beams. The fireplace is 68 units high (where the fire goes) and goes a further 24 units up before getting narrow towards the top. Don’t forget to add a smoke effect to the top of the chimney.
