When a merc gets blown away it is not that unusual to see their gun, tools or deployables be left behind …floating in mid air.

Seen that a lot more since the patch. Also, if you know kill someone carrying an objective, the obj will be shown on the ground as usual, but there will be also a duplicate of it still on the body or middair.

Can also confirm this - mainly primary weapons (I guess whatever the player was using at the time?)
