Flashing Light

(Big Bang Hank) #1

I need to make a flashing red light, the sort of thing you find on radio masts, any ideas of a texture or how to do it?

You can use a dlight and change the color to red, or you can make an animated shader that uses images of one going from on to off. Also, you can use a corona to give the glow effect.

how do ya use a dlight?

there is a texture that may be what your looking for:

lights/light_m2r

I needed something just like that for a map I am making. It’s not perfect, but its pretty good.
Shader

textures/flare/red_flare
{
	deformvertexes autosprite
	surfaceparm trans
    	surfaceparm nomarks
    	surfaceparm nolightmap
	cull none
	{
	clampmap textures/flare/red_flare.tga
	rgbgen wave sin .5 .5 0 .5
	blendFunc add
	}

}

It is a sprite so just make a nodraw square brush, apply the texture to one of the square sides, and fit it to the brush, the origin of rotation will be the center of the face. Now the only problem with this is that the sprite will go into things, like you mast, so I just stuck it on a skiny pole off the top of my tower, this elimanates most of the problem.

yeah or you could just make a red light and have an entity target it then when you play the light will flash on and off (regardless of when it is triggered)

it will not add to the light grid so it wont light dynamic models

Could you explain this more, do you mean a dlight or what?

(carnage) #8

just place an ordinary light, press k to get the colours up and chose red, then make a trigger once and target it at your light

to add a dlight ;

  1. right click on the 2d grid and select ‘dlight’
  2. press k and select a color
  3. press ‘N’ and then: type in key ‘style’ and select 1 - 19 for value so: value ‘13’
  4. the upper part of the entity window will explian the functions on it.
  5. link a trigger mult to it or add a vis_dummy to make the flash…
  6. a constant flashing is possible, but you will need to use this information to put it to use in your own map and make it work how you want.
