First time in impressions

(Rushster) #1

I play a lot of ETQW, played Brink for a while too but ended up going back to QWET because, well it was the better game.

Tonight was the first time in DB, and while I only managed about 4 games before the servers cleared out, I was left in two minds about the game so far.

First impression is the actual pace is quite slow. Not the gun combat, that is fine, but moving around it feels quite sluggish. One reason people still play ETQW is the fast pace and I feel that DB is being completely geared toward close combat, more like BRINK. Now while that may be the design intention, I do think it would be a missed opportunity to take elements from ETQW and bring them into DB.

The map design feels good but I would certainly like to see more open space, again I need to see more of what’s in the pipeline.

Having not had enough time in the game tonight it’s too hard to form a real impression but I really want DB and Splash Damage to succeed with DB.

I did sunk in cash to get in early (never done that before), I am determined that DB is top-notch come released so I look forward to giving more feedback as testing continues.

You will like Camden when they bring it back into the map rotation in Alpha . I am a big ETQW fan myself, so I totally know how you feel there.

I am just wanting to make sure it doesn’t completely go the way of Brink which was snail’s pace. Being able to leap about in ETQW is one of the appeals and I always felt BRINK was slowed down to cater for the consoles and it really hampered the fun factor.

Also vehicles, another great feature of ETQW, not seen anything of this yet.

I think you’ll be in a much small minority group with this request.

Vehicles are a big no-no from me.

(Rushster) #5

I agree I may well be in a minority but I feel they do add a strategic element to objective based gameplay that is lost without it.

I too feel the same. I think i once called it “freedom of movement”, which essentially is reflected throughout the game as putting certain restrictions on you, so that you feel blocked. This is my interpretation at least. There are a couple of different examples throughout the game, which reflect a certain intention and idea behind, which i do not agree with.

On the other hand, it is a very hard task to get this tweaked correct. If you say you want fast paced gameplay, well, if this would mean adding possibility to players so that they can get from A to B quickly, then this risks that the gameplay will result in “overclashing”, where either the enemy is constantly in your face or the other way round, which is due to the map design i feel (very small maps combined with fast-paced gameplay is risky).

I think some are already satisfied with movement, well i certainly would say that i am not. I think it boils down to have more character control to me. I feel alot of control is taken away from me and is restricted by certain imposed laws, which can be physical laws or gun mechanical laws (e.g. reload slow down, slow down when knifing, slow down when you pinned a nade and are in the process to throw it, etc.) or simply bugs, for example when you touch certain models in the map, you will not feel like you hit a solid surface and act according to what you expect, instead you will move slightly up and down very quickly, which is a bug.

But on the other hand, there were already alot of changes i found extremely well done and i hope it will even in the future be subject to adaption.

More open space would be neat as long as there’s enough space to cover. Or it will only be too frustrating. Movement wise I’d like to be able that I don’t lose the momentum when jumping forward. And strafiing could be a little bit better but even now the game already plays really well

(Violator) #8

Movement for me is getting better, but strafing is still very slow (hard to dodge), the 2-3 jump restriction on bunny hopping + the slowdowns on reload etc. means its more of a cover-based shooter which takes away some of the natural movement flow for me and it ends up kind of awkward, but we are early days yet.

Re open space, Camden has more open space areas - I think its my favourite map so far though not played it that much. The current movement / shooting mechanics don’t lend themselves to big open spaces though IMHO.

I will always end up comparing new games to W:ET, cant help it after been playing for so long

Im also of the opinion that the movements feel slow, also i would like the possibility to lean around corners

and also hoping for open space maps.

but only played 20 minutes so dont have much to report yet tbh

I generally dislike leaning around corners. Especially as currently if you see an enemy, unless he does a perfect sniperheadshot you can always get to cover again. I’m not sure if it’s a good idea for this game. Not in the way the damage is set up now.

For myself I hate when I crouch and I 'm still crouching and what to run I can’t just press Shift to start running, having to press C then **** is annoying

Using Toggle Crouch

That’s my first impression hehe.

Haha, I’m having the opposite problem: http://forums.warchest.com/showthread.php/34362-Please-let-me-decide-when-to-uncrouch

Perhaps there is a typo in the code to check status of the toggle/push var.
I agree I may well be in a minority but I feel they do add a strategic element to objective based gameplay that is lost without it.:)
would be difficult to include vehicules in DB …not the type of game for it …no enough space in London
But yeah i like vehicules also …but i will pass this time …next SD game we will need some

on a serious note. a vehicle must promote teamwork. see image.

if SD dont put this in then im moving to the Caribbean in protest.

I had a few games now, and besides the fact i cant seem to hit a barn unless im standing inside it, i really like it. j/k

Movements:
First impression is that it is quite close to what I like a few minor changes and i would be happy

 • Speed, It feels a bit slow, imo the sprint button should be more powerfull, maybe ad a powerbar so you can only have it on a limited time.
 • Crouch, is good
 • I would like to have the ability to lean as in WET
 • Will we be able to Bunny jump? atleast i cant do it right now

Gunhandling:
I like it that we dont have all the weapons to choose from we had in Brink, tbh, people will fast discover which one is best, and then all will be using that one, stick with a mainweapon and a sideweapon for each class, maybe give 2 or 3 mainweapons to choose from.

 • Should be possible to reload while sprinting imo
 • Why is there both croshairs and ironsights? seems a bit redundant, dont get me wrong here but wouldnt it be enough with a crosshair? preferably 1 you can adjust in form , size and colour.
 • a scoped sniperrifle should make serious damage when a headshot is given  like taking 90 % of health
 • Could be fun to have flamethrowers and/or panzers

Hud
It is really looking good imo, just again i have a few wishes :):

 • I miss Fireteams
 • would love to have a lagometer
 • <3 Vsays  but it is some really weird voices, they talk like they just woke up
 • console should open with more than 1 line visibel

Maps:

 • I havent really been checking those yet, as my mainconcernings right now is to get Me moving and shooting as good as possible

Ingame Voicechat

 • No need for that imo, I would prefer to use an external like TS3 <-- no need to flame thats just my opinion and absolutely not a serious one

Servers:
I like that there will be dedicated servers, now i hopes that it will be possible for thirdparties to run them and also that there will be linux server binaries

well these are some of the stuff i was thinking on after playing it for a bit, but i would like to say that the game has really surprised me in a positive way
also if you got the weaponhandling and movements made to perfection it would be easy for SD to make a sequel all you had todo was to take dirty bomb ad vehicles and make new big outdoor maps and a cool new name
