First reviews after or before the launch?

(hamstein) #21

Doesn’t PCgamer usually release reviews for games which come out in the month corresponding to the magazine? I’ve only bought one issue to entertain me on an airplain and remember a review for a game that hadn’t come out yet or came out earlier that month (I forgot)

(Linsolv) #22

Yeah, come to think of it, most magazines will PROBABLY be coming out with their reviews afterwards, just because most magazines hit mid-month (at least, they do for me… stupid mail not bringing me my magazines until weeks after everyone else gets theirs) and that’s after launch.

As far as TV (GTTV, G4, etc) I can’t really guess.

(DarkangelUK) #23

I wonder if Zero Punctuation will review it.

(TheBIG_Lebowski) #24

Im with you on this one dude. I hate critics, its just their opinion. And if it doesnt fit them, then its a bad review. Its just not honest enough to have a small group of critics be the life or death of a game and its franchise. Thank God for gamefly.

(tokamak) #25

I think it’s too big for them to pass up. Popular games generate more traffic. The semi-singleplayer story is enough of an excuse for Yahtze as well.

(Mustkunstn1k) #26

Well, luckily Brink was pushed back 1 week. Otherwise it wouldn’t get reviewed (he would definitely review Witcher 2 and LA Noire before Brink, after those 2 there would already be more new games).

I mean the guy doesn’t play online games (well, maybe MMO’s). Is he just going to play the singleplayer? In that case he would definitely rip it a new one.

(Mustang) #27

He hates multiplayer right?
And Brink is about getting SP guys to play MP
So IMO it could go strongly in either direction…
…knowing Yahtze’s style I think we can guess which direction this will be

(Kneepad) #28

I honestly hope it doesn’t get the best reviews due to it not being the same John Rambo CoD /Halo kind of shooter where you can run through a whole team by yourself. That might keep all the CoD type kids from hopping over and ruining the game for everyone else. Not saying everyone on CoD, you know the type of kids I’m talking about.

(RAAAAAAAAAAGE) #29

I know what you meant to say and i agree. But proper reviewers wont do that. Newspaper reviewers on the other hand… In fact i want to see The Sun’ review of Brink.

(Hot-Wire) #30

Yeah I can’t wait to see some reviews.

Their opinion doesn’t really matter, but if they manage to leak some gameplay we haven’t heard of yet, I’m all for it.

(Realirony) #31

I kind of feel the same way you do about this. Especially about those kids that wont play Brink the way it was meant to be played. The ones that will just farm kills and not help out really >.>

But a little piece of me kind of wants Brink to stay a semi-hidden gem, one that isn’t tainted by mainstream, so that we (the selfish awesome people) and enjoy the game without it getting poisoned by players that don’t appreciate the games new take on FPS.

But of course thats some far reaching thought in the back of my head, in all actuality I hope it gets great reviews, sells well, and brings in all types of players. SD really deserves to have their work hit as many people’s homes as possible. They have really worked hard on Brink from what I can tell.

I sorrta feel the same way, me and a friend i still game with i met in quakewars years and years ago, were talking about how recently game communities had really went downhill. I think part of that is the mindset that games like cod and bc2 etc attract. Brink rewards a totally different type of gameplay and thus totally different players. I still like thinking of it as the intelligent man’s shooter, kinda like the difference between fast food and a home cooked meal i guess. Theyre both food but its just not the same.

(Gamer2Gamers) #33

Damn the Witcher 2 and LA Noire come out the same day,eh? this month is stack with triple AAA titles - I’ll be surprised if BRINK scores around the 9 range I am assuming it will be a 8.5 game i set my expectations low so im never disappointed.

(SKS) #34

Bleh. I think people look too much into the scores that reviewers give to games without actually bothering to read through the review. The final score they give doesn’t mean you will or won’t enjoy the game.

A well written review will give you insight as to what the gameplay is like, the learning curve, control mechanics, etc… The reviewer will go over the bugs and if it makes the game horribly broken or if it is just a minor inconvenience. You should then take that information and decide if that sounds like a game that you would enjoy.

People who just look at the final score that someone else gives a game are going to miss out on a bunch of games that they would really enjoy. The reviewers don’t always like the same type of games you do. That review score they put on the game is their opinion… not yours.

I have high hopes for Brink actually. I think it’ll review well. A lot of the ones I watch (G4, Game Informer, etc, to each their own) they are getting tired of the “Cookie-Cutter” FPS. Every game doesn’t need kill-streaks to be good. You don’t have to feel like you’re in an actual location in the world to make it feel significant. You don’t need some general that’s going to die later in the game to cuss you out because you missed 3 shots on the firing range.

People are getting over-stimulated and over-marketed with COD, Battlefield, Medal of Honor. I didn’t mention Halo because it isn’t multi-platform, so it’s still somewhat of a niche enough to stay strong in it’s area. Not that I think it has a lot going for it, just the ultimate fan-ism that drives COD as well. I predict this as a fresh way to play to most of the world that isn’t as familiar with SD’s work (honestly, I’ve been a console gamer for years now and I didn’t dive into Wolfenstein due to really poor reviews, this will be my first SD game). And, I think thanks to it’s freshness, it’s going to score in the high 80’s which is good for a new IP imo.

Wolfenstein (if you mean the 2009 one) wasn’t made by SD but by Ravensoft.

(RadBrad31) #37

Thank you for correcting me. I was wrong. They made other Wolfenstein games then I didn’t get a chance to play. So, I’m completely fresh! Sorry about that.

(tokamak) #38

No chance to play their Wolfenstein game? It’s free!

So no SD word about this?
