First Official Brink Footage Released, Shows Off SMART

WASD+Shift+SPACEBAR for mobility takes up every finger on hand.
Perhaps you don’t really like to strafe jump HORSE?
Side keys on my mouse force me to re-grip the mouse.

I don’t think the speed of how quickly you need to throw a grenade is really an issue as nading is more about timing and accuracy of the throw. Whatever minimal speed advantage gained would be negated by the fact that I’d have to sacrifice mobility and accuracy.

Wolfenstein tried what Brink is proposing. Many of the comp players ended up using a script that bound a key and mouse1 to nade at the same time. So what we would do is hold down the nade key “g” (or 4 in my case) then simultaneously hold mouse1, then release the nade keyboard key, then release mouse1 to execute the throw. Needless to say it was annoying and I uninstalled Wolf as soon as the fail tourney ended.

As mentioned before, I use my thumb for most buttons and yes, I strafe jump.

the buttons I use fingers for are WASD, caps, shift, ctrl, Q, E, R, T, and Y, and any mouse buttons. All else are with thumb, and I can press on space bar with my palm/lower thumb when my thumb is in use, so I can still jump.

Thats nice dear

Well not everyone uses their palm (?! wtf, whatever) to press spacebar.
How can your palm be situated on the spacebar when your fingers are on wasd + shift anyway? You must have a really small hand and a very big thumb if u can manage to press every other key with your thumb.
It sounds like the weirdest keyboard abuse i’ve ever heard of.

And u have an extra “lower” thumb next to your thumb? That explains it, lol

Yeah, because everyone is pressing space bar with his palm, right? RIGHT?

So u press 1234567890 with your thumb, now I see why u dont like weaponbanks

Don’t you ‘pr0’-whining-gamers-who-hate-innovation see?

The time it’d take to add grenades as a weapon bank so you character doesn’t become drunk whenever he pulls one out is time that could be better spent adding more character customisation!

Customisation is one of the main focuses in Brink, because customisation is great. Except, y’know, when it comes to customising how you actually play the game.

What the hell? No thank you, I like gameplay better then an extra tatoo I can pick

(DarkangelUK) #170

It’s different devs that add customisations than those that add functions probably…

Nice troll attempt, too bad it was too obvious !

(shirosae) #172

Mental note: This forum has degenerated to the extent that sarcasm tags are actually useful. It wasn’t even a troll attempt - arguing a position to show how ridiculous it is is perfectly valid.

Here’s a translation of what I just said for those who don’t want to make any attempt to understand it:

People keep going on about how customisable Brink is*, and the idea that the controls don’t count as part of that customisation is utterly lol-worthy.

*how you get to build your character and choose whether you follow a storyline or play wherever, or play on scrub XP servers or not, or play on this hardcore mode, or not, etc.

I honestly don’t believe that anyone is stupid enough to genuinely think that refusing to offer both grenade methods as options in the same way that we offer crouch and toggle_crouch is a bad move that will harm the game.

(H0RSE) #173

I only use my palm for space when my thumb in use, otherwise I use thumb for space…

So u press 1234567890 with your thumb, now I see why u don’t like weaponbanks

I was speaking about letters mostly, since it’s pretty obvious people use fingers for the numbers…I also didn’t feel like listing ALL the numbers and ‘F’ keys in my list of keys I use my fingers for. I figured common sense would run its course, and you guys would understand. Next time I won’t be so lenient…

I honestly don’t believe that anyone is stupid enough to genuinely think that refusing to offer both grenade methods as options in the same way that we offer crouch and toggle_crouch is a bad move that will harm the game.

That’s not the point. With that mindset, the devs may as well make an alternate method for doing every action. You know, shift for crouch really isn’t doing it for me…I wanna hit shift, then hold down a different button to maintain my crouch, you know cause my pinkie gets really sore when I have to hold down shift, and a shift toggle just isn’t the same…

(DarkangelUK) #178

Back in the day players created their own options via scripts for actions that weren’t present, and weren’t normally, such as the crouch toggle. This is the opposite, this is removing an option that the majority are used to having. I could see your point if we’d never been able to do it, so i don’t see what the problem is having both options… which imo is far more innovative than removing an option and replacing it with a less desirable one.

(Ryan) #179

+1

Yes, this is removing an option, well said!
I hope for the customisable autoexec.cfg

(H0RSE) #180

This is the opposite, this is removing an option that the majority are used to having. I could see your point if we’d never been able to do it,

But that’s just the thing, you HAVEN"T been able to do it before…at least not in Brink, because it is a brand new game…it is trying new things. It’s not like it’s a sequel and it’s removing options from the first game. Just because you were able to do something in one shooter, doesn’t mean that every other shooter should have all the same options and capabilities. If devs only made games with options we were all used to, we would all still be playing shooters with the arrows keys, and not using mice to aim. Yes, you could do things in the ET games, but this isn’t ET. it is an entirely new IP with entirely new ideas, and not all new things are liked by all people. You guys also come off a little elitist, speaking like this option will ruin the entire game, and forgetting that this isn’t a PC exclusive title. Your problems are PC control scheme problems, not problems with the game in general. If you guys really hate it that much, a solution has already been posted:
