First impression
It’s an interesting idea. When we hit closed or open beta and we get many more CS, CoD and BF players asking for more iron sight, slower movement and prone, new players after new players, should we listen to their well-founded comments too?

We have to make our own judgements as well as taking onboard feedback. We have to judge who is asking for what, when they are asking for it, why they want it and how that stacks up with our ultimate goal for the game.
Well of course when more CS,CoD and BF players will ask for slower gameplay as you said, it will be up to you to make a choice. Do you want to make a fast paced FPS as you announced or do you want to please a maximum of players by doing a melting pot of several gameplays.

I mean I didn’t said that Extraction was going to be a fast paced FPS, you did. I wouldn’t be in the alpha otherwise.

That’s why, as an alpha/development forum, reading through past threads are very much worth your while before posting these kinds of threads. Not simply to avoid repetition, but to give you all a better understanding of where things have gone, where they have come from. I mean in the impressions that keep coming up from new players, these same basic things keep being commented upon, but if you go back over past threads, there are a lot of other interesting ideas that we’ve discussed here, some of which SD has taken and discussed amongst themselves. Comparing what the game plays like now compared to the first 6 months, there have been some relatively dramatic changes and improvements.

Not that I want to be the one to bring up W:ET again, but I remember playing that when it hit beta and there were some elements that didn’t quite make sense, didn’t quite work… but as they were polished out for the release version and in patches AND with a developing community that were really fun to play with/against, our impressions changed. There are things in this alpha that resemble that W:ET beta… things that aren’t going to be fun until people accept that “this is how it is, it’s on me to adapt and exploit what’s on offer” within that environment of a healthy (ie populated) community. And naturally, we can’t be certain we can readily adapt to the game properly until it finally leaves beta.

I’m still wrapping my head around the MOBA style character classes… part of me wants to hate it, craving the good ole days of W:ET and ETQW. And as many people have issues with Brink, I can tell you that even with Brink, if you had a chance to play with a full server of people that were not only committed to the proper team play mechanics but also towards out performing each other where possible… Brink was a really good game that simply needed the inevitable extra polish and balance that should have come with proper patch/community support. I had that experience because I played exclusively with a local community that had still been playing ETQW, and those matches were a lot of fun. With the right people, and the right attitude towards adaption, this is still shaping up towards becoming a fun and challenging game to play.

Interesting way seeing things XD

Basically this:

I think you should cater to one of the worlds totally, and not make stinky compromises. Everyone will be dissappointed, for reasons i tried to explain above. CoD peeps expect shorter TTK, ET peeps expect longer TTK but with corelated movement and more movement skill involved in firefight.

This rarely happened when I played Brink. Which is why I left it. Happens a lot with ETQW. Which is why I still play it. I will try to not judge DB/Extraction until it releases. This is just the beginning of the beginning. Tons of stuff will change between now and release.

Did anyone say prone?

I guess I was lucky, almost the entire server I used to play on made the migration to Brink for the short while it lasted. They rented their own servers out for it… one for pubs, one private for regulars only. It’ll be worth trying a recruitment drive when the time comes to convince them to switch and give the game a proper chance. I know some of the crew I played with will need some major convincing because a lot of people felt burnt about Brink losing support so quickly.

The support side seems to be driven by demand. Glad to hear you had a positive experience with Brink. I thought the game had potential. I was excited when it came out. But the word potential seems to be like a two way street these days.

I don’t think those specific things will come up. CoD players might need everything laid out before them plain and simple, and most likely will maintain interest overall if there’s a solid match making system to reduce frustration. CS players might complain about respawns, no SnD, and lack of recoil, but aside from the very ET specific game mechanics being asked for there are a lot of other things that definitely should get attention simply because they are hurting the game for everyone.

The CoD player I invited to alpha was very happy with the game a few patches ago when everyone else was complaining, however it wasn’t unique enough for him to get addicted per say. If there’s too many similarities then gamers just view it as a lesser copy of the game they already enjoy and won’t bother. I think if anything the perceived similarities will convince people to try it, but when they do they should find a reason to want to play it over all other games or at least split their play time between other games. The one thing that’s funny is that most CoD players I know constantly complain about how lame CoD has gotten, but they still continue to buy the games and play because there’s not many better alternatives out there with comparable player bases.

I still think you guys are on the right track overall even though I really loved ET/ETQW, but specific things in this game feel really underwhelming and frustrating for anyone. Just as long as you focus first and foremost on making the overall game feel logical and polished, rather than trying to attract/please every type of gamer you will satisfy me.
