Fine connection, no connection: Brink make up your mind!

(Private154c) #1

Hi there!

Long time forum lurker, first time poster.

It seems I am running into more and more connection issues lately.
I’ve browsed trough the forums for people with similair problems and possible solutions, yet the topics I managed to find on the issue seem to differ slightly from what I am experiencing.

Here is the deal:

No problems running brink on my system, everything runs smootly, no lag, no FPS or performance issues.

Once connected to a server online, same deal: All is well and runs perfectly.

It’s the getting connected in the first place wich is the problem. Lately it seems to be a 50/50 odd chance wheither I get and stay connected.

What happens is a combination of timeouts when logging on and disconnects once in game.

33% the time when I log onto a server, it refuses to connect and “Times out”, after wich most of the time (not always) my internet connection breaks, wich prevents me from using internet at all untill my router reconnects.

Another 33% of the time, I do manage to connect to a server, play perfectly fine for anything from few seconds to a few minutes, after wich I loose connection, I get booted from the game, my internet connection breaks, wich prevents me from using internet at all untill my router reconnects.

And the final 33% of the time is where I can log on perfectly fine onto a server, no problems at all, stay connected and play for hours if I want to.

Yet even then, there is the possible chance that sometimes my internet connection will break again once I quit the game, wich prevents me from using internet at all untill my router reconnects, etc.

Soooo, this all seems a bit random. Sometimes it all works fine, smooth and dandy. At other times it wont work at all and the game will balls up my internet connectivity.

Would give you the specs of my rig if I knew where to find it. (Not the best wizzkid in the world, I just wanna play games).
All I know I run a i7 CPU, 4gigs of RAM and have some or other NVIDIA card and have highspeed broadband internet wich never gave me any problems before.
Point me in the right direction and I’ll post more details on my machine.

Some thoughts would be appreciated!

This probably isn’t anything to do with your specs, although your video drivers are over 2 years out of date and should be updated (see my sig).

Please can you check with the administrator of your network and find out the following information:

Here we go, hope it is any help!
Will update the drivers, I’m a total slacker when it comes to taking care of my machine, thanks for the headsup! =D

To you Private154c, I had this issue with steam and L4D and a speedtouch modem. I hesitate to post this but you could try it and see. TheBeBox is a speedtouch modem.

This fix should correct the following issues:

* Servers in Steam/in Steam games suffer ping 'spikes'
* Difficulty/Inability to connect to servers
* Use of Steam/Steam games causes the BeBox to freeze/stall/restart (crash)
* Loss of connection to servers, or timeouts
* Poor performance ('lag') in servers

If you are having problems with the fix supplied below then please post in this thread and I will try to help, but I will not be held responsible for any damage to Be equipment etc. You know the drill.

This fix involves editing the user.ini file to change configuration. of the BeBox. This can also be done through telnet but I recommend it be done this way as I ran into problems trying the fix via telnet.

1. Follow this link to the router configuartion page:
http://192.168.1.254/cgi/b/bandr/?ce=1&be=0&l0=0&l1=1&tid=BACKUP_RESTORE

2.Enter username & password (default is Administrator, with the password left blank or the S/N from the bottom of the BeBox - without the bit in () )

3. Select Backup Configuration Now.... Don't close this window

You should now have a user.ini file containing your router configuration options.

4. Open it in Notepad. Go to Edit , Find and search for appconfig application=GAME(UDP)

You should see three entries regarding UDP. You need to change them to:

appconfig application=GAME(UDP) trace=enabled timeout=3
appconfig application=CONE(UDP) trace=enabled timeout=3
appconfig application=LOOSE(UDP) trace=enabled timeout=3

Now again, go to Edit , Find and this time search for timerconfig timer=udpidle

You should change this entry to:

timerconfig timer=udpidle value=3

5. Save that user.ini file to the desktop. Switch back to the Speedtouch router page and select Restore Configuration Now....

6. Use the router dialog to locate and select the user.ini file that you have modified. The router should upload the file.

7. Once configuration is uploaded, restart your router and all 'Connection Problem' or Server list crashes or Restarting of the BeBox due to UDP flooding in CSS and other games should be FIXED.

I would also like to mention that I have the BeBox firewall set to Standard in the BeBox router page Toolbox.

Please post feedback.

I have no problems playing the game in single, in multiplayer I can connect to a few servers here and there(except the ones I want to connect to that have the best pings and have players). Once I do find a server to connect to I have had no issues playing and staying connected for hours on end.

PC specs

Windows 7 64 bit

Question. Wouldn’t it be easier to just release a small patch to diagnose connections only during the time when people try to connect to servers, and send the info info?

(Ed12Many) #8

Yeah, I’ve had the same problem as well. Finding a server is really hit or miss with more misses than hits. Also I’ve noticed that there are a handful of servers that show up with the same number of players and the same map that are never playable(of course they have to be the ones with some of the better pings and open slots to join)

I had to power cycle my DSL modem/router recently and the in-game (not Steam) Brink server list jumped from ~125 to ~375.

As a network tech I have to assume there is some significance there.

-JJ

EDIT: Dynamic IP btw (ie non-static, changes on modem/router reboot) if that makes any difference.

EDIT EDIT: Oh, and I’m supposed to say throbblefoot’s network Kung Fu is greater than mine. (Marriage is a real pain in the ass sometimes.)
