Few questions about Brink.

  1. The balance. Now I know that the game has an awesome matchmaking system which actually puts players at similiar levels together, but on PC most players are going to play on the dedicated servers. So this brings me to weapon balance etc. It seems to me that everything is a direct upgrade. I’m not gonna say that Call of Duty is balanced, but a lvl 10 can easily take down a max level character. Team Fortress 2 also has a lot of different weapons, but balance still exists.

So how does it work in Brink? I mean if I think about it then Enemy Territory also had direct upgrades, but everybody were equal as they pretty much started together (like we all know the upgrades weren’t permanent).

  1. Web intergration - stats etc. Quake Wars for example had a many websites where you could see your progress for example. Will there be some for Brink too? Or atleast the abillity to make something like that. So if you look at people’s profiles you see their characters, stats (kills, deaths, headshots, playtime, most played maps, most used weapons etc)?

  2. Voice chat. First off let’s talk about regular voice chat. Is there a in-game system for this because why complicate things with Ventrilo. Put beyond that is there going to be both team and all talk? This is something that sometimes makes me mad in TF2. It is either one or the other. Some servers have only team, others have all talk. But I would like both. And maybe 3rd one for Fireteam (if Brink has them). That would be the best, so you can also talk to your friends. I would also like it because I play in UK servers with my Estonian friends.

But when talking about chat is there going to be quick-commands. I love those. That way people who don’t have mic / are shy can still kind of communicate basic information fast. I hope you all get what I mean by those. Personally I would definetly prefer the one with the bubbles from ETQW. But it can be an option so people with lighting fast fingers and good muscle memory can trigger them by numbers (similiar to ET).

  1. (Mini)Map / icons. Nothing much to ask here actually. In Enemy Territory I always got confused by the fact that the minimap was stationary instead of your own icon. This meant that sometimes when I was looking at stuff I wasn’t sure where they were at (if the map itself would rotate then everything on the right side of my icon would actually be on my right etc), which made things kind of confusing when trying to revive players. But from the videos I have seen that now the map does rotate, yes? Also - how much info is on the screen itself? For example can you see your teammates thru the wall by a small icon? Or can you actually see the revive icons thru walls? I think you should see teammates most of the time with icons otherwise sometimes you might get a little bit confused who is an enemy and who is not - specially because of varied characters with the customization system and all that.

That’s all for now.

  1. Players can play against any rank or they can choose to play against players of similar rank. Players can filter out servers that have either option. In regards to balance - the powerful upgrades you get in the beginning. Other games tend to use the opposite approach.

  2. No leaderboards. I believe there will be in game stats. And I believe there was speculation about viewing players persistent stats if they were added as a friend.

  3. No quick commands as far as I know.

  1. Most modern games let you pick between static or rotating minimap, IIRC ETQW had it too so it’s safe to say Brink will have the option too.

Quick commands have essentially been replaced by chatter generated by the objective wheel, and automated responses based on gameplay.

We need maniacal laughter VSAYs (like in L4D)

Interesting. But what happens if you notice a “Covert Ops” behind your teammates? Is typing / voice chat only way to alert them?

(Exedore) #7

If you see someone ‘behaving suspisiously’, then typing or voice chat is the way to alert them. If you’re an Operative yourself, you have a way to remove their disguise and notify your teammates.
And then, there’s the tried and true method of killing them.

1: Each player can have a maximum of 5 upgrades, each upgrade is equal if you want higher tiers you need to sacrifice more slots.

The real advantage of being in a higher level is having more upgrades to chose from.

Who says you can directly tag disguised players in the first place?

Team Speak and such voice software that allows players to ghost enemy’s positions or a simple “spy behind you, Joe”

Not tagging. Just letting people know that there is a “Covert Ops” (I really don’t remember the name for Brink’s version).

But that does remind me. In TF2 you can yell out “Spy!”, but when you are looking at a specific team member it says “That class is a spy!”.
