Feedback: Remove public account level and add Merc level (back)

(Amerika) #1

Before we begin I’d like to state that most of what I would like to see written below is fluff and not a huge part of the core game. Obviously development efforts should go primarily to core features getting into the game first. However, it would go a long way towards removing a few issues and misunderstandings while making DB a better product in the long run.

As the game has progressed over the last few months so has a lot of our levels. Account levels both high and low can be a source of ridicule. Also, in public and ranked, people incorrectly assume that balance is done by account level when it is not. This produces quite a bit of animosity for the less informed players of DB and is a constant topic on other boards. So I would like to give a little feedback as to what I would like to see and why.

**Remove public visibility to your overall account level

  1. I think this would remove a lot of animosity as people won’t automatically think teams are balanced or unbalanced based on level. It’s an extremely common viewpoint, if incorrect, that all matches are balanced by account level.

  2. It will also remove a lot of the ridicule higher level players get. It might not sound like much but even at level 44 I tend to have multiple people on every server point out my level (and it mostly tends to be negative). People can also point out a player lower level and use it as a point of ridicule as well but that’s not as often.

  3. It’s fine to keep the account level in…just don’t leave it public. Or at least give an option to show or hide it

  4. Account level could still be used to limit when a person could play ranked MM but nobody would know your level. Only your rank or merc level (if the below suggestion was used) would be shown.

**Add in Merc levels (or add them back I guess)

  1. If Merc levels were added in you’d still get a form of progression that is wanted/expected by a lot of players these days.

  2. Merc levels could be limited to something like 10. It wouldn’t be trivial but it wouldn’t be amazingly hard to get. It would show that you’ve got at least a certain amount of experience per Merc but since there is a ceiling it will be less likely to be a source of ridicule or animosity. Also, this could be used as a progression system from time to time. Every once in a while raise the level from like 10 to 12 (or something like that) similar to MMO expansions allowing players to artificially progress. Some people enjoy that. And a level increase could be tied to “events” in-game (similar to operations in CSGO or any MMO expansion) where you get a lot of new content like maps and new rewards for reaching max level.

  3. Merc levels could be used to give cases and small credit bonuses. Hit level 10 and get a free Elite case or some other reward like a selectable skin (spitballing here).

  4. Merc levels would tie in nice to Steam achievements assuming they will eventually make it into the game. I personally don’t care or go for them but I know many who do love them. And maxing out merc levels would work nicely for those.

  5. Other perks could be added to maxing out mercs. Maybe a new skin you can choose if you hit level 10 with a merc or some kind of title if titles were added to the game. Obviously you wouldn’t want to give power. I believe in the past you unlocked taunts with merc levels.

  6. This could be used for ranked MM. Basically, you limit a person from using a merc they aren’t at least level X with to prevent somebody from buying brand new merc X and then doing horribly with them in a ranked match. Now, I don’t fully agree with this as it’s hard to justify somebody making a purchase and not allowing them to use it immediately how they want but there is already a level restriction in place for your account…might as well think about using it per merc so people get some experience first.

Thanks.

I agree with the ridicule that comes with being a higher level. I recently had to resort to using a smurf account just so I could try out new mercs because for some reason it is assumed that a high level person is supposed to be an expert with every single merc and their abilities. If I do horribly trying out different mercs I never hear the end of it because it seems to be only acceptable to be “bad” if you are under level 10. Anything above level 20 and for some reason people expect you and to be a “god-like” player 24/7.

I agree with bringing back merc levels, it would then fix some of the issues I just described because I can then just point to the fact I am just a level “1” with this merc but the one I play the most on is level “10+”

The rest of your post was pretty spot on, with only one little thing that got me a bit concerned.

You said “new content like maps.” Are you suggesting putting maps behind an effective playwall? So you have to have a level 10 merc to play a specific map? If this is what you mean, then I totally disagree, but if you meant something else then yea ok.

In Heroes and Generals, if I remember correctly, only gamemodes were playwalled, simply because of the difference in skill. In TF2, it is “recommended” that new players start with a straightforward gamemode. If the Execution gamemode was paywalled, then ok. If it was an EV map, then I don’t see the point.

But yea, overall I agree.

No paywall. Just a PR based “event”. Basically it’s like announcing a new F2P expansion where you get a few new features and maps. A big neon sign that either says, “hey come play our game we are still supporting it” by giving new players something to see, old players something new to strive for in merc levels and new maps to play and ask players who had quit to return.

That was my idea anyway. I see it happen in other games and it works wonders for player interest all around so why not do it eventually in DB?

  • Would be cool to not see player levels in scoresboard.
  • Merc levels were in closed beta, If I remember, we get ability to unlock perk slots and special taunts. For me, merc level is a better explanation of player ‘experience’ with specific merc.

So actually I agree with your suggestions, however the unlocks/bonuses should be only cosmetics.

I’m a bit tired of all the ‘nolife fat neckbeard virgin get a life’ comments I get every single day. Hiding account levels would be super nice. Please make it happen.

In MM when people see high levels (not mean high rank) people leave the match …
I’m all for hidding the lvl to other players

(ragnak) #8

There isnt even a single good reason to leave your account level public, so i am all for removing it. Mercs level with unlockable taunts sounds pretty good so i am all for this as well.

I enjoyed merc levels, it gave me a reason to try out different mercs, and hence broaden my merc shaped horizons.

(Szakalot) #10

see no harm in revealing it at the end of the game though

Well there would still be time to call the Lvl 44 an idiot for not topping the scoreboard… :frowning:

Taking the levels out of the picture would go a long way in making people understand that they have no impact on how the teams are balanced.

oh but people DO have an impact. you ca swap, you can switch, you can vote for shuffle

(shibbyuk) #13

I dunno… it always seems to me that level, being an indicator of experience, does count for a lot when it comes to balance. Rank, however, doesn’t seem to indicate anything at the moment. Saying that, I do think merc levels is nice.

Morons can find lots of ways to ridicule other players so it’s pointless to hide levels for this reason alone.

(DB Genome editor) #14

I meant levels have no impact on team balance. Of course the people themselves do…

I does but only to a point. By the time you reach level 10 you should know everything there is to know about the game unless you are really not paying attention, so levels become meaningless.

It’s not the only reason, it’s also misleading and adds no information of any value. It’s fluff / clutter which people too often assume to be meaningful.
