Feedback needed : base race !

(RasteRayzeR) #1

Hi folks !

As you may recall some of us have followed the course “Mapping 101”, and in the procedure of designing a level it is strongly encouraged to ask for feedback in the early stages of map development. For me this is the Base Race.

And that’s what I’m asking you here. Here is the layout I (with the help of Stealth6, thx buddy) came up with for this Base Race Map :

Red & blue squares = bases.
Red & blue blobs = spawn & forward spawn
Purple = park with trees to block LOS
White = clear street between the buildings
Yellow = forward spawn flag / hack objective / thingy to capture forward spawn

Your part :
- What do you think of it ? Would you enjoy such a map for a Base Race?

Thank you all for your input !

I like the idea of recapturable spawns, it’s something I really miss in this game and which I definitely liked in ET.

(shaftz0r) #3

the movement speed isnt anywhere near fast anough for baserace

(n4ts) #4

True, imo you need strafe jump for baserace… else you won’t even make it out of enemy’s spawn…

(stealth6) #5

Well it won’t be as easy as it previously was. You won’t be able to run in grab an objective and run for the hills. You’ll have to work together, clear the area, then jump in grab an objective and run while somebody covers you.

You won’t be able to catch up with players running away, but this could be solved by making short routes risky (in the open so you can get sniped in the back) or make them long and safe so enemy players can take a shorter route to stop you.

(RasteRayzeR) #6

I’m still not sure as whether this solution is really better than the first one, will have to ask jonny_hex or fishbus about this too

(ailmanki) #7

Have you seen the latest Baserace: Bastogne?
http://www.planetwolfenstein.com/battlefield/bas_home.htm

Maybe have the two buildings destroyed where the spawns are. And you can get objectives to build that up again.
Where will the objectives be, in enemy base?

(RasteRayzeR) #8

That’s how a base race works yes, but bastogne is too big imo

(RasteRayzeR) #9

Which one do you think is the best :

Note : the forward spawns are in the center building for both solutions, bases are in green in the first solution.

(Kl3ppy) #10

I would prefer solution 1. Wanted to post yesterday that the ark should be in the middle and the bases should be on the street which go thru the Ark

(RasteRayzeR) #11

Thanks for your input, this is also the one I tend to favor, as it allows shorter travel distances and is easier to block the view on the external world. Also if I do this solution, I will put doors to the center of the arch, maybe do a secondary objective about it … dunno yet.

(Kl3ppy) #12

Wouldnt be a Construction fence enough? You can put there a gate like in camden 1st objective which can be closed and opened by both sides?

(RasteRayzeR) #13

The distances are shorter and there will be a lot more ways to take cover while you bail with the construction materials. The original base race was a clear line of sight clamped only by the fog of war. It’s among the adaptations I have to face to make a base race viable in DB.

I also want to encourage the team effort, because the original base race was all about 5 medics rushing, picking 5 objectives, and bringing to their base 3 of these 5 and win. The original one was fun but had some clear issues : sniper heaven, rambo medics overpowerful, 0 cover possible except for the trenches, etc.

So the style will be the same, but adapted to fit DB.

I was thinking of doors slightly opened, like in the first objective of goldrush next to the tank (allowing for encounters and massive use of airstrikes), because lets face it, both sides have a better time with the gate closed (not seing the enemy’s base directly), so if it’s constructed it won’t be destroyed lol.

Fair enough, I understand

Mhh you might be right.

It’s really hard to think of everything when you design a map, and even if on paper it looks great, when you start building it into your map, you see all the issues that may arise, it’s a true hell

That’s why I really appreciate you all expressing your thoughts about my map, because it helps me a lot. Sooo, reputation for the both of you !

Thnx for the reputation.
Do you make this map with the UDK? If yes, maybe I can take a look at it when the blockout is done? I’d like to check it out and give my feedback on it.
I’ve been working with UDK for like 2 years now, trying to make my own game… but never finished due lack of motivation/teamwork.

Yes, we work with the UDK and I will make a thread in the general section of the forum once I’m done with the creation of the bases and all the routes, with the map available for download and importation.

What kind of game were you building ? A mod or a completely new game ?

I was trying to create an game like this, not alone ofc, with a couple of friends.
Point was, we didn’t knew anything about UDK… so we had to learn it. Countless hours were spend on video tutorials and courses… And after that we were ready to start creating our own game… Although… we thought.
The journey wasn’t so easy as we thought. We lost motivation and after that the project bled dead…

After all it doesn’t matter so much since DB is here now, which is what we wanted to create, or at least becoming what we want. (I still have lots of feedback to give, which I will do soon after a little more testing)

Anyways, I would love to review your map when it’s made available.
