FD Mod : Sky not showing

(zero chAos) #1

I was editing the Fuel Dump Spring pk3, and I changed the graphic for the clouds from clouds, to a solid semi-transparent solid blue.

I saved as a TGA with the same name, and 32-bit color. Yet when I overwrote the original file, the sky doesnt appear ingame. The sky is just brown. What am I doing wrong?

As well, what is the filename for the snow? I want to make it a lighter green.

If you want to modify images that were with the original game, DO NOT overwrite them!!! Do NOT use the same name either. This is asking for a lot of trouble! And I’m not just making this up…

The best way to do that is to take the picture, modify it and save under a different name in a different dir (usuallly the dir will be named the same as your nick/map/whatever).

For a second, imagine if you overwrite an original texture… send your map to the cohorts of players… Their skies would be your sky. That shouldn’t happen. It’s the exact same thing (and even more so) with shaders.

If you want to make a sky shader, look at the tutorials on the sticky thread list up top of the forum…

If you overwrite the original files and save them under the same name, you will screw up the textures for map which has the same textures but comes before yours alphabetically.

Spring.pk3 already trashes all the textures… can’t do much
more damage than it already does (it DOES have a README
that warns of the implications).

I think the sky texture goes into the map at compile time
and therefore can’t be changed. My PK3 checker script
is always issuing warning about missing sky textures
because they aren’t needed after the map compile.
I think… maybe.

The textures used for setting the color of the light emanating from the sky are only needed at compile time. The actual textures used for the clouds can be overwritten as they are loaded by the game.

I stand corrected on skies it seems but I have to wonder about what you said Chavo. I can understand the light part of the sky and the clouds but if I use a skybox (Terragen) I’d think I need to include those in the pk3. So would that only be true for skyboxes or even skyportals?

(chavo_one) #7

I was speaking in reference to what siliconslick said. I was also talking specifically about fueldump, which has a sky shader and not a skybox. Any image that has to be displayed by the game, must be included in the pk3.

(MadJack) #8

That’s what I thought

Thanks for clarifying.

I am SO lost right now. I just overwrote the sky in Spring.pk3, I assumed on startup, it would grab the new texture just as it did for the original in the Sprink pk3. Apparently not, but I don’t get what your saying. I’ve never made a map, let alone shaders.
