Falling Down

(KnollDark) #1

Now being a traceur (parkourist) I know you can only roll from a certain height before you destroy yourself, so my question is after a certain height do you take damage depending on your body type (a fall that would not harm a light would harm a heavy or medium), also in new footage at http://www.vg247.com/2011/04/18/brink-video-feature-and-screens-from-james-bonds-villain-base/ around 4:19 a dude gets wrecked while going up a ramp and falls off the building, in such a case you couldn’t really recover so would you take damage from that fall

(Nail) #2

yes, you can take damage from falls, going into slide may negate some damage

That vid has always amazed me =p

As for why they decided to make it a slide instead of a roll, which would be more realistic, they decided that from a first person perspective, rolling was too disorienting.

(KnollDark) #5

So will “The bigger they are, the harder they fall” apply

(Mad Hatter) #6

I hope not. It makes sense for your size and bulk to have an effect on how high and far you can jump, but it wouldn’t make sense to make bigger guys worse at dampening impacts with the ground. Anyone can land right if they know how.

Body mass makes a difference, but speed is more important (mass x velocity squared), and everyone accelerates at the same speed when falling so speed would eb the same for two different sized guys falling the same distance. You could argue the bigger guy has more muscle to dampen his fall accounting for his larger mass.

Also, it’s too complicated to make different damage for different body types on same fall distance, you should know how far you can fall and not have to stop and think about what body type you are. High effort, low reward (or even negative reward).

Probably damage is the same for all body types.

(Nail) #8

falling is nothing, it’s the sudden stop where inertia takes over that could make a difference

(Exedore) #9

And it went against our “You can always shoot” rule.

(obliviondoll) #10

You could still shoot mid-roll.

You’re just more likely to hit your teammates, the wall you just jumped from, and your own legs than anything threatening.

(Yes, I do see the point, and until I read your post, I was planning on making it. Probably a good sign for community support when the developers are showing up here more often than I do (although my excuse is partly that the BethSoft forums are more active. I still check in here occasionally though)

Na, just roll down a stair and make the True Lies Jamie Lee Curtis thing, but I guess we would need female characters for that.
