No, he means true lighting so that there are shadows. These are just lampposts with a nice corona effect.

Right now, everything looks flat and non-lighted. I’d allso need to look at how many portals you got, so I’d know where the filesize comes from.

Dicon, did you do any playtesting sessions on this map?

A couple things were readily apparent when I loaded this up for playtesting.

Loads of missing textures, including all of the mountains.

You did not include stairs going up to one of the main entrances of the town wall…so it looks a bit unnatural having a doorway on the second floor leading out into the fields.

Your tank splines need a lot of work. You go over the bridge just fine the first time, then you turn around and fly over the river, then start digging into the Earth…and crashing into structures…turn around again and do the same thing a couple more times, just a little to the left each time.

Really needs to be fixed, as do the missing textures. The elevator has some problems.

The brushwork seems to have some unsightly seams in it as well,a couple of windows are not aligned properly with the buildings, and you can see the void or skybox (the texture is missing behind it, so I have no idea what it’s supposed to be) behind it.

A couple of buildings, the boat,the foutain and the music was taken out of Caen and seemingly without that mappers permission, since one of the buildings has slices going through parts of the building, like it was decompiled and not taken directly out of a map source.

While you have said that this is a remake of Caen, credit should be given to the mapper (Zig-Zag) who originally made the title in your readme, if he wants that. You should contact him and solve all these issues in the beta2, you’d be much better off I think.

Sorry to be so critical, a lot of these problems would have been very apparent and fixable before you released a beta1, if you had playtested, obviously this didn’t happen.

No offence but this is the kind on map you make to see how maps work, and never release. It is clear that you have just ripped 2 of my favourite maps, Caen and Venice and various others. And just for your information a Remake is made to be BETTER then the orignal.

not true although if you do remake a make then its unlikely people will play it when there is a better version of the map out there already

and if you are going to do a remake then making an already made map is a bit of a waste of time unless you try to imporove or change the details e.g. Wild west remake of beach

i belive its because of the high polly hills in the background. or might be the fact that it looks like a meta only compile so i doubt there is any vis blocking

  1. Codename Ty - I think you don’t have many maps. Special for you i upload textures (http://mapping.ovh.org/terrain.rar). Remember - this is a beta1, not final version ;]

  2. Everything between church tower, objectives and other few things I made. This isn’t stolen map, this is only remake.

Well, would you be excited or even want to play on a map in which you got 9 FPS? That’s significantly worse than Radar, which everyone already complains about frrom a FPS perspective. You presented your map as a beta, which implies a certain amount of finishing/polishing, made it publically available for test, and asked solicited comments and criticism. The comment about the 9 FPS points to the observation that 1) you didn’t run a vis compile (which is stupid), designed the map extremely poorly, and/or have a really crappy computer. If the latter, then don’t show the FPS meter because you’re just shooting extra large holes in your foot.

9 FPS when you’re standing in the map all by yourself would indicate that if you ever got a full game running on it, with smoke and explosions going off in the background, that you’d fall far below 9 FPS … not exciting and doesn’t make me want to even open it up for testing.

Think again then. I’ve played over 800 maps, the only ones I haven’t that have been publically released (and even some that haven’t been) are trickjump maps (and even some of those I’ve loaded up), everything else I have checked out. I still have most of them on my HD and over 100 in one of my etmains (have 2 installs).

Your custom textures are not supposed to be relying on other maps, nor are you supposed to be lifting textures from other maps without giving people (mappers or texture artists) credit and asking for their permission prior to doing so.

I suggest you go back and read some tutorials. The fact that you say that the tank splines were not directly lifted out of another map, means that you didn’t learn much about using splines. It’s a complete mess and unfortunately, so is much of your map. I hate to be so crticial, I’m an aspiring mapper myself, but I guess the difference is, there is no way I would ever release something in such disarray as you have done, it looks extremely rushed.

This is no race, you don’t have a deadline and you’re not getting paid to do this, not to mention it’s only your first map. Your first couple of maps will be the most important, as the people really into customs and into the community at large will see what you have to offer and judge your level of talent off of those releases. Many won’t give the later ones a chance, if the initial couple of maps bombed. Start off on the right foot and polish it until it can’t be polished anymore, then playtest it, make minor changes based on feedback (that you’re comfortable with) then promote and release it.

Better luck on your next version and future projects.

This is my first map, and this is beta1 version. If you are making your own map you know everything about it, if you are making remake your knowledge about this map is small.

I’m making map for fun, no for money, and I’m shure that the other mappers making the maps for fun. Title of the map is: Fall Weiss beta1 - Caen Remake. I wrote that the map is a remake, no my own map. If you are listening to hip hop, rap or R’N’B you know that the loops from songs are usually “stolen”, but the authors of those loops often don’t protest.

The original authors get royalties since their loops are used. Of course, they won’t protest as they know about it and get money.

You are making this for fun, but bear in mind that if you use someone’s else work without asking/permission we won’t take you serious. Whilst using parts of someone else’s work can be a sign of appreciation, looking for permission is a form of respect.

And if you would wonder what I made before: my only officially released map is a conversion, but I got permission for it from Gerbil. It is only a slight difference, but I think it’s the way to go.

hmm beside the points already brought up, textures are wack! but maybe its just casue i havnt seen them in a decent light compile, anyway, lots of work to do, especially with those big dark single textured buildings in the centre on the map
