F2P Model - Doest it have an effect on it´s community?

(onYn) #1

A Question I have been asking myself quiet often in the past days is, if the F2P model by itself has an effect on the community playing the game. What do you guys think?

I have noticed a lot of so called “toxic” behavior in mobas, as well as in F2P MMOS. Games you have to buy, or even pay a subscription fee for seemed a lot of more enjoyable in that aspect. This experience can have many different reasons - but maybe F2P really is one of those.
I mean it makes sense that people are more likely to go “full retard” when there is nothing they can loose. Even if they get banned, all they need to do, is to create another account.
Another reason for this “toxicity” may be the increased amount of smurfs you finde in F2P. I know that you can find those alternative accounts in many games… but they are much more rare if you have to actually pay money for the game.

So I am wondering… if going for a pure F2P model really is the best way. I mean it´s not only the effects the F2P model may have on it´s community, but also the way the game and gameplay has to be changed in order to fit the F2P market. I honestly would prefer an approach more similar to CS:GO. That would be to not “shape” the game arround possible F2P requirements (what is going to be a bad thing in every case), sell the game for a “budget” price and on top of that sell cosmetic stuff in the game to gain more revenue. That - in theory - could not only make the game better, by giving more freedom to the game designers, who then wouldn´t have to worry as much about the moneymaking in there game but also improve the games community.

I know this may be too late and stuff, I am just curious what you boys think :).

I’ve seen a lot of “budget” price games fall flat on their face because they are MP only and not enough people buy in. After launch when the population is merely mild or rather low, new players don’t buy in because they understand that once the game community dwindles, the game is basically dead. I have more than a few MP only games that were budget price but didn’t succeed long term due to population issues.

I’d rather see this game as a f2p since it has a higher chance of having a bigger community. I don’t think f2p = toxic community necessarily, but the bigger more successful games and communities do have more toxic personas.

I share your concerns about f2p opening the game to more “full retard” people. However I also think there was no other way to get this game going. This is due to a recent previous AAA SD-title which certainly would have had an impact on the initial playerbase willing to pay full price for Dirty Bomb. Free2Play enables everyone to try the game themselves before they invest any money.
So yes, F2P does have an impact on the community, but it neither only good nor only bad. And as you already stated yourself: It’s too late now anyway  Maybe the next SD-release after DB will be a AAA title again, who knows…

f2p is good, because it means player base can easily grow. The only thing that is needed is a well thought out anti cheat system (not just the nexon scanner thingy). I will probably upload like 45 euro’s when game goes live and play around with it. The main thing is that you can only buy cosmetic stuff. But I am relatively confident that they will get this right.

Even in CS:GO cheaters are ruining the game and it has VAC which I consider a pretty good AC, it costs money to make a new account and it has a rank system.

Imo DB already has 1 foot in the grave by being an F2P title. I don’t think there is an AC out there that can save an F2P title from cheaters. In b4 “All we need are admin tools and we’ll fix it”

There’s always the option for a DB retail bundle

Regarding toxic behaviour, removing cross-team chat/voice seems like a good start.
What need is there to communicate to the other team? The majority of times it’s players acting like knobheads to the opposing team.
I’m mentioning it because I’ve just read it was what Blizzard did in Heroes Of The Storm.

Maybe including a “founders” edition, that allows you to transport every items you had on your previous account as well as gives you the option to play only against other founders as well could further help people who really want to enjoy the game.

i don’t know, maybe so you can talk to people? ‘great shot’ ‘sick trickjump’ + some friendly battery between like-minded individuals.

Had to register when I saw someone asking for the removal of all-chat.

No. Theres HotS and HS for people like you. I’m playing a multiplayer game, you know, with other people. Let me talk to them.

Also, more often than not the trashtalking comes from your own team.

Banning chat? lol i’d trash that game right away…

Don’t worry, it would never happen.

The only possible option that might be added is a toggle to hide it at the client level, but it would never be removed from the game outright.
