F key issues, inconsistent since patch

(Smoochy) #1

has anyone else noticed the buff/magic-do-everything-button (F) seem to not work brilliantly since the patch?

last night and the night before it seems to take an eternity to register and outline the person you want to buff. sometimes i am stood right next to them and it doesnt show for a couple of seconds.

FPS are too fast paced for things like this. a few seconds messing about keeping pressing F and then you die.

anyone else seen this or is my keyboard playing up? i only recently changed from having the magic button on my mouse middle button as it was a bit iffy on there.

also, when i had it on middlemouse button i could look with the mouse when capping CPs. now i have to use left/right straff buttons, which is akward

one would think that when a teammate is outlined and targeted when you press F the interaction will stay on that target but last night it didn’t happen.

I was about to throw a syringe to a dude and my character went almost 180 degrees (CP or someone else, I will never know) and I died because it took me away from cover.

Also like smoochy mentioned, there is a latency from the moment someone gets targeted and the moment you can actually use F.

For the sake of both issues (and it could probably serves as a workaround for the people who are crying for separate action keys), would it be possible to add a way to lock targets? and also reduce CP influence area to the bare minimum (if it has not been done already)

its not just that. it seems much worse the last 2 days. it doesnt even seem to register F when i press it 1/2 the time. before it did, it just span me round 720 degrees and confused the **** out of me.

now i can look at someone maybe 1m (game measurement) away and it doesnt outline them for ages. seems to be since the physics patch 2 nights ago.

anyone else? for me it got worse about a week ago, after the physics patch!

I sometimes have to press F 3 frigging times before it actually throws a damn syringe.

This BUFF system is a total time waister in a fast paced game

do you find it worse than it was a couple of weeks ago? i thought my keyboard was broken until everyone started saying it.

got a reply from rahdo:

my q:

any news on a better method than the magic F button in Brink? its the biggest gripe on PC now. win/loss is often caused by this

reply:

we’ve looked into it (from requests on our boards) but can’t separate it. :frowning: we are looking to make it more responsive though…

lets hope they can tweak it to make it less random. removing the lag from PC might help. i also suggest that medics throw syringes for buffs, like engineers can throw weapon buffs. the fact that medic is the only person that needs to be close to buff might be one of the big issues. no other class seems to suffer as much as they throw buffs and upgrades.

i also suggested that they use some form of hierarchy to help:

:: revive
:: adrenalin
:: speed
:: buff
:: metabolism

at least that way you would get a more intelligent method rather than the random one we seem to have now.

thoughts?

I find quite often (10-20% of the time) even though my target is highlighted (for me it usually happens at command posts, but I’ve also had it on players, plants etc.) no matter how many times I press F it just won’t engage
I have to move away (unhighlight) and move back (highlight) before it will work
When this happens it also, more often that not, takes 3 to 4 attempts to re-engage (unhighlight/highlight as described above) before finally working
This can take perhaps 10 seconds to do, which in the middle of a firefight is a death sentance

I had problems with this system when it first came out. It’s not fast enough.

Well from my vast experience of being a medic in comp, this system is truley frustrating to say the least.

So many times i will press the use key, it will lock on and drag me to the person however i have to press it again/couple of times before it will actually buff someone :rolleyes:

Then there is the priority order, when moving a hostage for example, instead of reviving a downed teammate, it always buff’s the hostage who is already alive and moving so you waste time + pip’s buffing a hostage instead of reviving your teammates :mad: Sometimes i get so pissed with the revive system i just chuck a laserus grenade when people are dead next to my feet, just to avoid the hassle & time loss it causes.

Start of a map, many times when trying to rush your first push (i.e get to obj asap), i will try and buff a teammate when we spawn but instead flick’s me round 180 and locks to the CP. (Ruining timings, and no buff to your teammate).

When you are under fire while trying to revive someone, you see the syringe toss animation to your teammate, before you die, yet they don’t get it :confused:

Needs alot of work to make it an efficient process which i can’t see happening.

I mostly play Engineer and I have no problems handing out Kevlar Vests and Weapon Buffs. When I play Soldier I have no problems giving out ammo. However, the Medic is a different story, it definitely takes a couple seconds to hand out a health buff, which I assume is by design.

The biggest issue for me is setting down a mine or turret. I think I must be hitting the f key too soon after selecting the mine/turret to place. Sometimes I have to hit the f key 2 or 3 times before the placement timer appears.

+1
Good explanation of the problem
