ExtraCreditz talking about paid DLCs etc.

I found this very nice show over a forum link and this week they are talking about microtransaction like paying for certain items or content:

very insightful

most important points:
“Don’t sell power”
“Don’t split the community” - i.e. pay for new maps

I honestly think its time for games like COD MP, Brink, and most shooters to charge less for the initial game (about $30) then release regular DLC that is more than just maps, and keep it in regular intervals at a good price. The games lifespan would be awesome, and the game companies would make a mint.

What is wrong with having just a nice game, then after it has matured enough and players got good and around the mp maps, to release a proper add-on with content on many levels (solo, mp, challenges…etc) ? Timed right, it doesn’t split the community that much. Of course, this also depends on the current audience…

Maybe that can be combined with dlc elements concerning cosmetics for chars and weapons (from texture to models). I woudln’t mind a dlc not too expensive that would contain 1 or 2 oufits for each side (outfit = head gear + shirt + vest + pants), but I would be more interested later on in a bigger pack with maybe 4 new maps and a bit of solo campaign/cutscenes, and challenges. For something like 20-30 euros maybe…

Still, good video with fair points.

What ever happened to expansion packs? You know, retail ones that you bought at the store? Seems like the only games that do this (regularly) still are MMO’s.

What’s this crazy talk of ‘expansion packs’!? Don’t you know they’re bad words to publishers?

Small DLC like 5 maps is much easier to design, develop and release. Less hassle, and at normally around £2+ per map; easy money. Why make the effort to improve a game on a significant level?

Just look at Call of Duty: United Offensive compared to Call of Duty nowadays (I still maintain CoD:UO was the best of the series btw!)

Edit

That was a good video, too. Enjoyed it - made a lot of sense to me as a consumer.

I think what their talking about has more relevance to free to play MMO’s then your more normal business model like Brink.

But they have done other vids on DLC. that are worth a look.
