Expirience Reset & Grinding

(RottenRibbs) #1

I was excited to finally get into the beta for this game.

However, after playing for quite a few hours you did a rank reset that caused me to just uninstall the game.
Now before you all start fervently defending everything the developers do to get a pat on the head consider the following:

1. If this is a real beta test, why does it take so long to unlock certain characters?

Don’t you want more players to try out all of the characters before the end of beta so that you are sure everything is balanced?

By only letting the people who play the game frequently to have the late unlock characters you incentive them to not give unbiased feedback as they won’t want their exclusive characters nerfed or balanced.

2. If you actually want people to beta test every character, why would you do an experience reset?

How does gating characters by experience level help you beta test the game in the first place?
Do you really want the late unlock characters to be largely untested by the majority of players that don’t play all the time?

On top of gating and not testing a large portion of the characters, you hit all the players with a rank reset for a totally arbitrary reason.

If you actually want to beta test this game and have everything balanced by official release, have all the characters unlocked from the beginning or let players be able to unlock them at a much faster rate.

If all of the player base only wants to play a handful of the late-game characters then you will obviously know that these characters aren’t balanced.

I’m not saying the late unlocked characters are OP, only that they should be available to not just the players that have played the game for ages. Also, stop reseting experience progress for arbitrary reasons.

They did boost the level up rates since the last patch for this very reason, but I doubt new or inexperienced players would notice much gain from it. It only took me a few weekends to unlock all the mercs for example. I personally would like to see the mercs unlock based on player choice via spending XP, rather than on a per level basis. It used to be like that, but the devs thought this current system would reduce confusion by not having an overwhelming number of mercs for a new player right away. I however politely disagree with that system as I don’t really consider mercs to be complex or that drastically different from one another to warrant such a system. Phoenix might be the only merc that could throw a new player off with his self-revive ability, but that’s pretty much it.

it’s probably best you uninstalled, you seem to be confused as to what a closed beta test is. Fell free to join again on full release

If it’s this grindy when they are supposed to be testing the game out then I very likely wont reinstall after the official release.

You can defend this game from any reasonable criticisms against it until it’s as dead as Brink or one of the hundreds of failed Nexon f2p games.

Tbh I also like the old system more (unlock chars you want) than what we have. On the other side the current system is good to “learn” the chars bit by bit. Im ok with that unlocking the “elemental” chars of the game by lvling up, future mercs will be unlocked like in any other F2P.

Also take in consideration most ACTIVE players who are in “beta” were also in alpha or joined early beta, so they played already each merc a lot^^ (like me I dont need to unlock them tbh, played them enough^^) todays term beta means like " finished game, only for testing servers and stuff". This isnt true at all for the closed beta!

at some point SD must test the leveling up system, collect data and optimize, change it

Splash Damage gives us things to test, we test them and offer comments. You just want to practice, you’ve offered no insight or opinion other than being butthurt you can’t sandbox. You get all upset scores were reset, who cares, we’re testing different things not playing a game, you can level up halfway through just running around on an empty server anyways.

Once again, we’re not testing a game, we’re testing different parts of a game
that’s what beta testing actually is, things will drastically change before/at switch to open beta, let us know what you think then

While we do our best to limit the wipes we unfortunately can’t guarantee how many there will be. Especially when we are working on the progression system itself… Nothing is essentially final in that respect. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Just for clarity this isn’t an early access phase. Things you earn in beta will be reset before live. Though we are talking about how we can reward our loyal testers.

At some stages we test mercs and everything is unlocked, other stages we test the unlock mechanics which is when they need to be gated. Getting to live and doing the last reset without testing the amount of grind etc to unlock mercs would create a whole host of new problems.

Just don’t do the “you must play at these times to accrue credit” tried this before and it didn’t work very well at all.

That was to stress test the server. We needed people in at specific times hence the requirements

@RottenRibbs‌ based on your Avatar I am just going to take a guess that you are a fan of Bushwhacker that was one of the later Mercs to unlock. I feel your pain bro but if they don’t do these tests there will be trouble in future. From time to time all Mercs are unlocked and the resets are not all that often. So chill.
