Expanding on the Brink Universe

(Zekariah) #1

I realise I am jumping the gun in a huge way with this thread. And apologies if the subject matter has already been touched on.

But I’m interested to know if SD or Bethesda has any plans for DLC such as further campaign chapters, more challenges or new maps.

Realising this is a new IP, I know it’s early days. But i just feel that 10 missions per side doesn’t sound like much if they just go the length of one multiplayer game.

Reeeeeaaallly hoping to get and SD reply on this…just hoping.

Sorry, go to http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24446
Paul already answered my Q.

No he did not. He cleverly evaded it so frantic fanboys wouldn’t dig up his comments later on and make a fuss about it.

That said, you can go several ways, there can be more conflicts taking place in the same timespan, there can simply be a sequel (depending on how conclusive the ending is), or there can be more stuff kicking off elsewhere on the oceans (opening up room for an MMOFPS).

They can make ‘‘what-if’’ missions, you know :stuck_out_tongue:

(tokamak) #5

Yeah am I the only one who thinks those stem from a lack of imagination?

True, tokamak. But can we expect any more at this point?

(Schwarzeis) #7

I don’t think you’re the only one, but I can say I don’t think they do lack anything except for some core-story participation

So… After 6 months, do you want to play the same maps, or do you might want to try something new? :stuck_out_tongue:

mean… Gameplay is important too. You can add ‘‘what-ifs’’, could add a little to the story from mouth to mouth, no?

Since the main-story are those 6 / 12 missions I guess not, therefor… WHAT IFS!

I was actually referring to any more info from Mr Wedgewood. That guy can tiptoe better than Natalie Portman!

(Schwarzeis) #9

Oh… That, yeah it’s a little silly when they really, really bypass the question

But they can’t spoil too much, nor can they for sure say they will have DLC

(tokamak) #10

I’m sure they’re already working on new stuff yeah. Brink is already a success. They say they’re all working hard on releasing. But several positions within the company are mainly concerned with the initial phases of the projects, like the concept writers and creative directors (now it’s not that cut and dry, these people surely had tasks on different parts as well) but when it’s nearing the end it will be especially these people that have time freed up working on a new project.

It was also pretty soon after the ETQW release that we had rumours about them talking with Bethesda about this mysterious new intellectual property.

mean… Gameplay is important too. You can add ‘‘what-ifs’’, could add a little to the story from mouth to mouth, no?

Gameplay and story don’t have to compromise to each other at all.

Then what did you mean with ‘‘lack of imagination’’?

(tokamak) #12

‘What if’ scenarios demonstrate an unwillingness to make decisions within a plot which weakens the narrative.

(Schwarzeis) #13

But then they are for gameplay and mouth to mouth theories/story

They got their 6 main-plot missions, I see the what-ifs as adding them to make the game have more maps / more gameplay, and sure - it’s nice to have story but it’s also good to have more maps

And they can’t really add more to the story after those 6 main-plot missions, can they? Since not everyone will have them, meaning not everyone will have access to the story

And if they can’t add maps in DLC, then there is well… No point in having DLC? For I sure don’t want to see just customization DLCs

(tokamak) #14

You can justify it that way, and it’s a sensible justification, but it doesn’t make it any less unimaginative.

(Schwarzeis) #15

Wouldn’t say unimaginative, but maybe… Less ballsy? :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyways… Let’s just hope we get some sort of DLC in the future, eh, Toka?

Yeah, that’s right. Besides, SD call it a “Universe”, so not adding their own added storyline or adding to maps, etc, kind of limits it to more like an “Island”

(Schwarzeis) #17

They can say ‘‘universe’’ when they mean their fictional world or their dimension, or whatever, no? :o

But yeah… I guess ‘‘Island’’ is more fitting

… Unless there are big-ass boats out there, full of survivors, with their resource war(s)

Now THAT is expanding on the Brink “Universe”!

(Schwarzeis) #19

Let’s just wait and see what they cook up for us in the future :stuck_out_tongue:

(tokamak) #20

Since the first background research for Brink there’s already been new things happening in sustainable development.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the founders experimented with geo engineering projects to adjust the climate or utilised kite turbines. Turbines big enough to float in the air (tied to cables of course), it could be a great hommage to all these ‘air island’ maps the community keeps developing. That would be an insane map taking place a mile or so above the ark. Spectacular.

Mirror’s Edge already showed how great parkour works within a vertical map, that huge cylinder which you need to climb up. The Ark could feature such a cylinder for generating clouds (by spewing sea water high up in the air).

These are things that you can smoothly retcon into the ark and into the story without causing a big bump.
