Thanks Stuart
Evenbalance gone mad
Yes, somehow false positives which are indistinguishable from real violations are acceptable
As far as I can tell, you cannot reasonably ban based on etpro AC output, because when a cheater report is later found to be a false positive, there is now way to tell which bans should be removed.[/quote]
bugfix5 anticheat should never false positive anymore.we only report known cheats that we positively identify as installed and enabled on the client, and silently log anything suspicious.
so bugfix5 AC output should be 100% reliable now.
but etpro should disable even unreleased private cheats, even if they aren’t reported.
Just gets better and better… :>
Alrady noticed a good few servers getting rid of PB and using the AntiCheat dependently.
Stuart,
Appreciate the info and update. I applaud any and all efforts to rid the game of cheaters. Nonetheless, PB screwed up with these updates. To release 1.082 without adequate testing was not a wise move. Additionally the ongoing problems with players still getting kicked due to lack of O/S privileges even when they are logged in as admins, leads to these desires to disable pb. Im sure myself and other server admins would be glad to lend pb servers to help test out new releases before they are implemented. Between my public servers and my position as the head of TWL’s ET division, these problems ruined my weekend
I never thought PB’s decision to get rid of its forums was a wise move and these types of problems makes that issue even more problematic. For all the people that read these forums, there are hundreds more that have idea where to turn for information. PB needs to reinstate its forums and do more thorough testing of its releases. Im sure some of this is related to growing pains as more and more games are turning to PB for anticheat protection, but I hate to see it die in ET.
well there was rather a lot of cheaters trolling and being total asshats there, not to mention the non-cheater trolls and asshats. It was like a world centre for trolls and asshats. Plus, everbody posting a rant on each and every problem expects some official post reponse with a complete solution and theres no way it might have been their own screwup “period.” and nothing else is ever good enough (and tbh, neither is any official post with complete solution).
fwiw there’s something of a substitute with http://www.punksbusted.com/ , though theyre not without a share of asshats…
The (german) Wolfmap ET Server (62.4.81.233:27970) is now running without PB and will be running without it until EB has gone sane again. We will not support ET in lowering the security of windows systems anymore.
sorry to be rude, but that is like ehmmm… less info
No, it’s not. It’s different from what’s been posted here, therefore it is additional, therefore it is more.
the forums were just a noob flamefest, so i can understand why they removed it. there wasnt any useful discussions on it at all.
It cant get any lower than it already is
TBH just running et.exe with additional rights shouldnt make your system less secure, unless someone believes that PB steals confidential data off your computer. You dont have to run everything as administrator, just et.exe.
Well, aside from that fact it already downloads and runs arbitrary native code, without prompting. :moo: Or that, based on the witnessed code quality, it almost certainly contains buffer overflows etc…
Personally I’m not worried of ET stealing data or anything, what worries me is the uncessary use of administrative accounts, either on your main account or an additional. Limited accounts are better suited for example in preventing installation of nonwanted programs/plugins etc, and will also provide better protection against viruses (if you can’t install something the virus will have a harder time infecting your PC)
True of course, however it does require the use of an additional user-id, as you may not want to run as the actual “Administrator” user (or equivalent depending on whether you run a localized language version or have renamed the account), which will require a password that should be changed regularly (accounts without passwords or passwordchanges are imo a security breach).
However one could of course easily create a batchfile to use the RUNAS command in Windows (provided one runs a version that supports Runas, afaik at least Win95/98/ME does not), but will everyone know how to do so ? I doubt it, and since the lazy way out is to promote the account to admin rights that is what I believe will happen
At least I’m all against this direction in security management.
But hey, the next step is hopefully that the players will require rcon or serveradmin access as well
(Hm, I should possibly point out that last part was an attempted joke…;))
I suppose you *nix fellas know all about the dangers of setting a sticky bit then - heh
hey it seems that we’re still having problems (people getting removed for invalid .pk3 files and pb invalid) on our server which is running etpro3.0.1
I think we’ve updated it now, so i recommed that anyone who’s got that problem updates their etpro
This struck me as the dumbest thing in a long time in ET. The sad thing is that most of the ET scene will happily go along with it out of ignorance, while the rest of us are forced into it because of the mandatory updates. What’s next, having to run ET as root when I play in linux?
I don’t know, is catching 5 or 6 cheaters worth a gaping security hole?
