EULA Discussion Frenzy '08

(Pegazus) #1
Hardly. W:ET is an id Software property. As the developer we used RTCW assets with their permission. That’s our privilege as a developer.

As a consumer, using textures and other assets from other games is almost always against that game’s EULA. Saying, “Oh, well, that game made enough money for the developer.” is no justification.

I suggest taking any further EULA discussions to a new thread. I’m leaving the existing discussion in this thread, but that should be the end of it in here.
Thanks for making it clear for everyone, i think they understand now.

(stephanbay) #2

if you didnt realize yet, all kind of maps have been created already for this game and all the new maps are just the same as the old ones (gameplay). Actually, the only thing new you could bring to ET is new textures, and may be some static models. This map is good looking and once again we dont care where the textures comes from. Now go get your lawyer and sue the mapper’s ass with your “respect the rights”.

Hopping aboard the Thread train tuut tuut

Well Jrad said:

So I guess these last posts are gonna go, but still.

The point is simple imo:
There’s no honor in just decompiling maps and bring it as your own IF you don’t mention the real authors

But I’m afraid my dear Peagzus, that your message is coming a bit too late :frowning:
There are a lot of maps who play with copyrights, but I encourage your mission

(Pegazus) #4

no words can explain this… You dont care where the textures come? Ok, well then i come to your garden, and steal your plants for texture purpouse and i dont care who growed them. Same way, then try to call police or sue me and dont try to tell me this is different, because it is not.

@shagileo
Yes, these will get deleted, but stephanbay did not understand what Jrad ment.

It’s never too late, I got pissed at Indy, because he is now making a “New” map from COD. Ok enough of this talk, or we all get punished by the tapirs.
I’l be back. In a new thread :infiltrator:

There shall be victory above these guys.

Listen, I won’t be the hypocrite here and will admit I’m rebuilding a COD map for ET myself at the moment. I am even planning on using the original textures and am very aware of the fact that this infriges copyright law and such more.

I also know that this whole question is morally contemptible, but, in my case anyway, I wish to revalorise and bring hommage to the original map. I must stress that I am not just decompiling the source map and then bring some new detail to it; I’ve created it entirely from scratch, of course to the spitting image of the COD map. Also, the original makers will be credited, but all of this doesn’t take away the fact that, strictly, the copying of the texturs is illegal.

This is my ambiguous problem: on the one hand, I completely agree with Pegazus on this legal matter, but on the other hand, I’d like to pay tribute to a great map by rebuilding it to the utmost resemblance. I’d like to know your stance on this, Pegazus.

If you made that map all yourself, from scratch and no decompile then i am quite fine with it, no complain there. I think the rights have nothing against if you make a similarity in it. But about those textures, i have to disagree, you could try to use free sites that offer textures or so, or make them on your own.
But i am fine with the building from scratch, at least you wont go the lame way like someone did around here
Btw, thx jRAD for making a new thread

(-SSF-Sage) #7

Why not make it totally new style? I mean the details, houses and all could be similar, but retextured. That would make a quite fresh view too and is easier than trying to mimick the original textures, if you decide to have some respect.

(Manwhore) #8

I will certainly envisage this.

Also, I’d like to express my deepest respect to the hardcore legal supporters here, as I am 6 months from becoming a Master in Law myself XD

(Nail) #9

EULAs are fun

Lol, i smell sarcasm in here or you realy becoming to be in law?

@ Nail.

That’s quite funny

I wasn’t sarcastic

(Pegazus) #12

Cool  Now you can defend me, anytime i get in trobule with law. lol
ok, let’s try not to go offtopic.

(shagileo) #13

And another thing: the map manwhore is about to release has some different shapes… hmm how to tell… ^^

I mean, it was the idea to recreate a COD map, but with a touch of ET to it (as the original map is just too small for ET)
It’s a pure and raw hommage (and I’m still trying to plunge my name into the readme  ) to the COD map (as said by manwhore).

And I’m afraid Pegazus… I already claimed him for (il)legal issues  :stroggtapir:

(such as stealing cookies from you etc…)

you are wrong  plants arent mine and will never be mine they are their own and belongs to the mother nature.

(stealth6) #15

you could look at ctf_face, that comes from UT, but they remadeit from scratch and used oter textures, that resemble the oriniginal ones, but aren’t.

That’s a good conversion.

Also you can make new things for ET, just look at isbowthen.
The onslaught map he made, and the shield. I also made a ctf system and a point system, so it’s not always other peoples ideas.

Actually it’s sad you can’t get your own ideas

I have not seen that map yet, but if it was made like that then it is realy cool  You can already tell that the makers of it put work into it.

Yes, the map Isbo made, was realy something brand new to ET and was also cool too. The shield was realy awesome (H)

That is nicely said
