ET Setup 2.0 Installer Manager beta

(stealth6) #21

If you’re making an installer that does everything for you then I think it’s better to put 2.60b in there too… It only provides bug fixes for the client so I don’t see why it would be an advantage to stay on 2.55

Especially since with the 2.55+ server patch you can still play with your friends who have 2.55

to address your points

  • removal of original WolfET.exe on the internet (most at least)

I don’t think this is going to happen, but why is it a necessity? If a few people still linger on 2.55 so be it + the 2.55+ server patch also solves this.

  • removal of any master list resolutions that support 2.55

Again not really needed thanks to 2.55+, but it would be cool if the new master list could filter it the fake servers (if it’s not already doing this)

  • removal of the etkey/punkbuster support for 2.55

Is it back? Though PB ditched ET before ID did.

  • most the 2.55 server owners would have to comply

If their server start running dry I think they’ll catch on soon enough.

  • a website, committee, and overall campaign towards 2.60b

A good idea and schnoog already suggested it too. On the other hand how are you going to make it globally known (so people will refer to that site rather than the 20 old ones)

But, if PB is removed… What AC will be used instead? Afaik, TZAC only supports ETPro? And for other mods?

Ah, and the Internet forgot nothing. Impossible task  When I started playing ET, I made a ZIP with 2.55 installer, patches and the All-Seeing Eye (R.I.P.). I guess it is still somewhere on eMule or P2P networks, since 2006… Or dead.

When I say pb/etkey I am talking about these independent updaters that 2.55 players can install. You want 2.55 players to move to 2.60b? Then all support for 2.55 should be dropped. For instance, a simple script checking for et 2.55 could be made, if it finds it, it tells the user they need to upgrade to 2.60b, and redirects them to the FULL 2.60b installer at etkey.org

We may not be able to get wolfet.exe removed, but we would need websites to post links to a more updated downloader (on the same page). Otherwise all of the noobs around the world that download ET for the first time (and there are many) will login, see there is nothing happening, and say pfffft…and uninstall the game.
Perhaps people are ok with a shrinking community, but it will keep shrinking. It will be like logging on to the original Diablo…a server here and there with a couple old farts on it. What a pitiful way for ET to die.
So yeah…something more than making a new downloader must happen. For this to work, I think splash damage, with its rankings in google, should post some announcements voicing a new direction, (i.e., “players move to 2.60b” “players download this new installer” “server owners get your server on the 2.60b list now”…etc). It has to move beyond these threads.

[!!!]Harlekin and schnoog,

Suggestions for your installer:

  • Can you add rudis host service to your installer? I think he wants it to download so users can keep it updated.
  • Also, can you include the fix for vista and windows 7 compability (aka run as admin)
  • Maybe have it clear .tmp files before installing, as many people attemt to re-install to fix problems related to corrupt downloads

I have some batch scripts for this if you want.

or…

unzip your installer and put the .exe somwhere on your website. Maybe I can include this in my installer/updater?

(schnoog) #25

What do you think about setting up a GIT repo for all files?

Then we can build up several installers with same source behind.

(cheesy) #26

Yeah sure, I think GIT is a good idea for your development. I do not know much about nsis coding, only windows batch, regedit scripts, a tiny vbs scripting. But if you need any of that I can try to help. I was going to offer my scripts to you anyway.

(cheesy) #27

Schnoog, I just sent [!!!]Harlekin a PM about this. But here is the thing, I think we just need to move quick on this. The git is great and all, but I fear we will lose more of the community before a collaboration would finish.

  • Just please add Rudi’s host service (if he agrees, and download perfered)
  • And an automatic host list install if the users cancel Rudi’s.
  • The regedit fix for Vista/7 compatibility/run as admin

Done! Now every player gets the game, pb, master list, and compatibility all at once.

This should not require much effort, as I have most the scripts already made.

If you can get this added to Harlekin’s installer, I can get your download link on same page as WolfET.exe on most websites. Then it will be Golden!

(NovaPrime) #28

The idea of having it all in one installer is good. I downloaded harekins from a random site, but then had to get on google and figure out how to get my list working. Not everyone is going to do that. Especially the new players as they are not psychic.

So will the master list install be added to Harekin’s or are we going to use cheesy’s thing ??

(cheesy) #29

My project has changed now that the master list has come back up. I will probably take the testing of it elsewhere.

Thanks to those that tried to help.

(69out) #30

Hi, why i cant download this file?

Regards.

(Mateos) #31

Last update 15 March, edited the 28, maybe top remove the link?

(cheesy) #32

I removed the link, see my last post. There is no need for an installer that has anything to do with a master list fix.

(stealth6) #33

Well it would be cool to have a back up for if this happens again…

(cheesy) #34

I am really hoping, that given the fact it was down for a billion years, maybe this new list has got staying power
