ET Runs Very Slow

i was using that example to discredit what he was saying by letting others know that he didn’t know what he was talking about. wasn’t necessarily about the topic. anyways, he changed it and said it was lower than 125hz.

my point is still valid though, you were saying that it’s his graphics card that requires changing, I pointed out that it wasn’t the card as I had a similar card and could play at 1024x768 with a lesser CPU (and another forum member agreed)

the OP hasn’t posted any FPS figures so all this is moot but if he cant get a playable frame rate at 800x600 it points to some other issue

Heres the results for glxgears

10734 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2146.724 FPS
3159 frames in 5.0 seconds = 631.337 FPS
927 frames in 5.0 seconds = 185.108 FPS
4171 frames in 5.2 seconds = 807.110 FPS
947 frames in 5.0 seconds = 189.394 FPS
6091 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1218.134 FPS
5974 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1194.632 FPS
2400 frames in 5.0 seconds = 479.834 FPS
926 frames in 5.0 seconds = 185.091 FPS
930 frames in 5.0 seconds = 185.927 FPS
930 frames in 5.0 seconds = 185.858 FPS
927 frames in 5.0 seconds = 185.377 FPS
929 frames in 5.0 seconds = 185.786 FPS
928 frames in 5.0 seconds = 185.428 FPS

I don’t remember where I read it (possibly on the fedora gaming forum), but somebody mentioned something about running the X server and the game at the same resolution, and that seems to make a HUGE impact, making the game playable. Since I lowered my X resolution from 1600 down a bit, i’ve been getting from 10-100fps; it changes rapidly when theres action.

im going to try out 1280x1024 for X and ET and see what kind of FPS i get. Maybe even 1154x whatever

Also, when playing in larger games, things tend to get choppy as action increases. I wonder if some of this is network latency?

ouch… there is something seriously wrong with your system… and it’s not only some trouble with mtrr or similar, since glxgears is pretty unaffected by this kind of settings <technical blablah=1>it does not need a lot of agp bandwith, since it uses display lists</technical>. i would expect steady frame rates of 2000+ FPS with a geforce3 (like your first result).

maybe your processor gets throttled… you are not using some sort of laptop profile by any chance?

lowering the X resolution might save you some gfx card memory… the benefit depends on how much video memory you actually have… IMO memory is not the limiting factor here.
the display resolution is changed anyway to your et resolution (usually 800x600, I would not go higher for playing et on a gf3)… you can still have your X server running at a higher resolution as long as 800x600 is supported by your X server config (you can check for the “Modes” settings in the config).

EDIT: running et at 1280x1024 is a little bit too much for a poor gf3, 800x600 is enough… the gf3 is not blessed with a very high fill rate… you won’t have much fun, especially if someone throws a smoke grenade at you or if there is an airstrike in front of you (i.e. a lot of huge semi-transparent polygons have to be rendered). (ok… an airstrike right in front of you is no fun for various reasons… but i am talking about the frame rates here g)
