Error: worldspawn isn't first entity

Hi guys/girls

I have been building my very first ET map for the past month, progressing slowly, having most errors and problems a newbie mapper has. So far i have found answers to most of my problems here on the forum (you guys rock!)

I was mapping today too, just some brushwork and texturing, and wanted to compile the map & load it in ET to check it out. Compiling went ok, but when i loaded it in ET i got an error “worldspawn isn’t the first entity”. So i decided to load my map again in radiant and try & find out what was wrong. When i loaded my map, EVERYTHING was gone, everything! I checked if i had hidden some stuff accidently, but i didn’t. I also loaded another map, and in there stuff showed up… in the other one, nada nothing rien!!! :frowning: Anyone ever been through the same thing, or have any ideas on what the heck went wrong? It sucks losing everything i worked on for the past month :frowning:

Any kind of help/suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Hi!
I have had the same trouble.
Do you have the .map file? Copy it. Then change the name to xxxx.txt and open it in notepad (or other text editor).
I do not remember exactly what to do. (I’m at work and away from my mapping computer.) But I just changed one thing, at the very top of the document.
I think I made sure that the first entity was classname worldspawn. (not sure!)
Tip: open a functional map, like Goldrush, and see what the first entity looks like. Then open your map and make sure your first entity looks similar.
End this by renaming the xxx.txt to xxx.map and open it in radiant. I hope this will work.
It worked perfectly for me.

PS. Why did this happen in the first place? I don’t know. I think I accidentally marked a brush and un-made it worldspawn. Thus removing classname worldspawn. Whatever. My heart stopped when it was all gone, like you describe in your post above (“When i loaded my map, EVERYTHING was gone, everything!”).

WOOHOO!!! It worked! Opened it in notepad, and saw the “classname” “worldspawn” was missing at the first entity, so I added it & saved, and everything is BACK!

Thanks a zillion Loffy

Make sure you do backups so you wont lose your work for real next time.

Do saveas:

mapname_01, mapname_02, mapname_03, etc. etc.

yeha,… had the same problem 5 months ago mapping for WW.
Probably u deleted the worldspawn key or what ever.
I took another method (if I remember right). I opened a new map and then I imported the old one.
That was all. So u dont have to open a 12 MB file with notepad.

And another tip. throw the notepad away,…We mapper need the Editpadpro: http://www.editpadpro.com/
The advantage is,… that it shows the files in a nice format (hhehe open your etconfig.cfg and u understand). U can open more than one file with it and u can search&replace in all documents at one time. U can use colourschema for the files (like in C++ IDE) and and and,…
