ERM....UH...HELP ME SET IT UP?

(wake) #1

OK Here is my question

In the last paragraph, the text in red found in the Q3map program’s readme_previous.txt. I dont understand where these things are or how to edite them, I’ve spent an hour trying to rack my brain on this and I am not really to skilled with mapping so anybody who can give me a step by step would help. It seems forum posts dont really help me maybe I’m just a slow learner :bored: , I dunno TY.

Important:

Before using this new build, the following steps MUST be taken:

IT MUST SIT IN ITS OWN DIRECTORY inside the game dir. It cannot
sit in the same directory as GtkRadiant as the DLL versions are
different. This will be addressed before final beta. Suggested
locations:

C:/path/to/Quake3/Radiant/
C:/path/to/Wolf/Radiant/

Edit your common.shader file and add “q3map_terrain” to the shaders
“common/terrain” and “common/terrain2.”

Drop q3map.shader and cel.shader into your scripts dir and add
“q3map” and “cel” to shaderlist.txt.

OH YEAH! and if there is anybody who can help me animate my avitar that would be appreciated! TY

@ wake, please drop the colors. It’s mostly unreadable. Second, learn to use [ quote ] [ / quote ] if you want to quote something (without the spaces of course), that’ll make it much easier to read.

The question you’re asking is very basic and though I"m having a very hard time believing you have made maps for SOF2 or anything without shaders knowledge, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Now, be a good boy and go read shaders tutorials. Use google, you’ll get tons of hits.

(wake) #5

Erm…yeah…so that was no help at all… The thing about the shaders is, I do not use any custom textures so there is no need at all for me to mess around with the shaders Duh… The shaders tutorial was no help…like i said I need step by step help and unless that is what someone is offering then I dont wanna hear from you oh yeah and I did the colors so I could seperate what I was trying to say and make it easier to reference to what I was talking about the quote thing wouldnt help me bc I wouldnt be able to change the part I wanted to know about to another color and I put in all the extra stuff to maybe spark someones memory maybe about what I was referencing to. And erm… yeah I did make the maps but no custom textures = no need to mess with the shaders files. Please no useless replies waste my 2 minutes it takes to read this stuff GRrrrr… It’s all good though atleast you tried to help

I’ll be nice…

First, you’re posting in the wrong forum. You should’ve post your question in the Level Design forum.

Second, in the previously mentionned forum, there are stickies. This sticky would most likely help do you think? “Tutorials and ET Mapping Resources”. Click on it then use the CTRL-F brings the Find window. Type “shader”.

Third, from the search above I found That link

Fourth. Searching the forum is also a great tool.

Five. Demanding help won’t work most of the time… Anyway, I hope that’ll get you started.

Not sure WTF Mr_Tickles post was about, but seems to me like MadJack was just trying to help…

Indeed, information on shaders have been written and rewritten many times over and a simple search can bring up information better than any we can write here. In such a situation, it’s better to point you to the right tools that you need to find the answer for yourself rather than just giving it to you. This may help you learn to be self-sufficient rather depending on others for solutions, which IMO is a far greater piece of information that you can get than the actual answer that you’re looking for.

I agree with obsidian, and to quote an old proverb

give a man a fish and he will eat for
a day… teach a man how to fish and he will eat for a lifetime

(blushing_bride) #9

urm i read his post twice it seems to me he wants to know how to get the latest version of q3map up and running. i dont think he’s specifically asking people to teach him how to understand shaders. it seems he only wants to know how to install q3map2 thingy . maybe someone could write a clear discription of how to do this then he would have a fishing rod and be able to go and teach himself to fish. the descrition in the readme is not very clear to me so i can imagine it might confuse someone espcially if english is not their first language. maybe im wrong…it wold definitly help if he could write in only one colour

Mr tickles whatever you’re on can i have some too please

(ratty redemption) #10

I`m busy atm, but if no one else has given him step by step instructions for installing q3map2 then I will over the next day or two.

and ot: I think Mr tickles has been consuming too much catnip :eek3:

(MuffinMan) #11

maybe this will help (together with setup of q3map2toolz)

(wake) #12

Blushing_bride ur right I just wanted to know how to get the darned thing working… And i get bashed :’( Muffin man I just skimmed through ur link and not sure if it will help but I will put some time into it later kinda bbusy right now and RAtty if you have MSN it’d be cool if u contacted me on there sometime to help maybe. Erm i dont mean to sounds dumb or anything im just not good with people not even on the interenet :’(

(MadJack) #13

Probably my last reply in this thread: I know what he wanted to accomplish but giving him a step by step instruction would equals spoonfeeding. I don’t spoonfeed anything to anyone.

wake, I didn’t give you the above URL to bash you and frankly if you think that was bashing you’re on for some surprises when you’ll read some other threads

With that being said, if you are really serious about mapping then I suggest you learn the basics of shaders. It is extremely important to know the basics. You don’t have to understand how an alphamod volume works but for the sake of your general mapping knowledge I think it’d be a great asset.

Take a bit of time off from mapping. Two hours at most is what you’ll need I think so get the information you need. Or at least connect point A to point B etc.

(Mr_Tickles) #14

Ok, I think I should try to redeem myself a bit…

First, I assume you have downloaded this thing seen as though you have already read it.
Second, I assume you have Winzip seen as though you have already read it.
Third, I’m going to assume that you know how your directory structures on your hard disk work seen as though you can find the files you download and have already read it.

If the assumptions I’m making above are wrong, please tell me, it would save a lot of time.

Extract all the files from inside WinZip (or whatever compression tool you used to read the readme) to a directory called something like “c:\games\wolfenstein - enemy territory\compiler”
Do this by pressing the Extract button in WinZip and put that path in the text box.
Press OK

To be able to use this you really need to have a .map file to compile other wise there isn’t much point to this exercise.
Open your command prompt (type “cmd” in the run window via the start menu)
Change directory to where the q3map2.exe file is (type: cd c:\games\wolfenstein - enemy territory\compiler [press Enter])

then type “q3map2.exe -meta <youmapname>.map” into the command prompt then press enter.

I’m not too sure about how to change the path q3map2.exe uses so… for this to work you will however need to place your .map file into the same folder in which the q3map2.exe file resides. Or… you could just extract the files into your etmain/maps folder and you wouldn’t have to worry about that.

Ratty if you have MSN it’d be cool if u contacted me on there sometime to help maybe. Erm i dont mean to sounds dumb or anything im just not good with people not even on the interenet :’(

sorry wake, but I dont use instant chat, and tbh Im too busy to help any more people in private atm, as I`m currently helping several other guys with their maps as well as working on my own projects.

as for communicating with people in general, the best advise I can give you is to read carefully to any technical info, maybe read a post or article more then once, as it`s easy to miss the gist of things the first time, and when possible try making test maps to quicky see the difference in compile options etc.

also dont be offended by the other guys asking someone to change the way they post, like what colors, fonts, capitalization are used etc, as its just about making the forum easier for us to read, and thus help reply to peoples posts.

I’m not too sure about how to change the path q3map2.exe uses so… for this to work you will however need to place your .map file into the same folder in which the q3map2.exe file resides. Or… you could just extract the files into your etmain/maps folder and you wouldn’t have to worry about that.

there are several ways to set up the paths for q3map2 and gtk… personally I do this in gtkradiant 138 et by editing the paths in following files …but use which ever paths and method you find best.

c:\program files\gtkradiant\games\wolf.game

e:\wolf\radiant 138\local.pref

e:\wolf\radiant 138\wolf.proj

we can have several game folders, containing q3map2 in various locations all using the same radiant to map with, by having multiple *,game files in the gtk folder.

and compiling with *.bat or *.proj files enables us to have the *.map files in different folders to q3map2.

sorry this isnt more detailed but its all I have time for atm.
