entities numbers

Ey’ guys

i would like to know…if you can open a pk3 file(map)…and then find out what numbers/id# the entities have?. like…a ammorack…has a number…right? (entity number)

sorry if this sounds awkward…im total newbie in “under-the-hood” information (mapping/editing stuff)…

I don’t know for sure but I think if you open the compiled .bsp file (in a .map file it would be easy as it’s plain text) you might be able to see the entity definitions and so probably it’s numbers

what do you need it for?

how to “open” a bsp file… (it opens as hex in texteditor)

(i need it for camera positions)

that’s because it’s already compiled, if you don’t have the uncompiled .map format of the map then you will have to stick to that version and look for readable text in it or try to decompile it - you can decompile it with q3map2, there are loads of threads on that topic at this forum just do a search

thnx a lot…ill try that.

You CAN open a bsp file and browse it in a text editor - I use editpad www.editpadlite.com

Scroll down near the end of the bsp file - past the binary data, all of the entities are defined there - in plain text.

You may have to turn on wordwrap so everything is displayed for you.

Highlight all of the entity data and copy the selection to the clipboard and then paste it into a new (and much smaller) file.

Make sure that you do NOT save the original .bsp file - just close it.

I don’t think that the entity number is retained in the .bsp though - just the entities information.

This is a good way to learn what can be done with an entity and how it’s formatted.
