Enjoying being beaten

DB is my only FPS on PC, and the broken matchmaking (lvl 7 me vs lvl 32) has actually made me a far better player. After the first week I was getting 1/20, now I’m getting 11/14 (or thereabouts of course.) in this way, I’m going to be kind of sad when match makings fixed, as even though the difficulty curve can be steep, I have enjoyed it. What’s others thoughts?

This is a good attitude to take into gaming. Fighting more experienced players can give you a good insight on how to play certain mercs or you may learn new positions on the map to attack or defend from. I know deep down i enjoy versing higher ranked players, even though on the surface i may lose my cool and get frustrated, at least i learn something.

TBH i find it somewhat good to play againsy good players because you become better and more skilled in that way. But on the other end it’s a bit bad when low lvls 1-5 join lobbies without a lvl cap and they play aginst lvl 30+

You know what? Good on you for thinking this way. Uneven matchmaking is always a benefit to at least 1 side.

You often learn new tactics and shortcut when playing with/against experienced players and also know how to deal with them.
And on side note, you feel hella good when you kill them.

11/14
LOL

Playing against higher-leveled players made me adapt to their constant movement and jumping, I learned new routes by watching them, and even a few tricks such as targetting walls with Arty’s laser designator and to better keep weary of a good Phantom without becoming utterly distracted.

It’s always good to at least watch and play against those better than you, otherwise you will never truly learn!

That’s the spirit! Contrary to what many people say, you learn the most when playing with best people. This is not just true for competitive games, but even for stuff like music.

And when you end up with a great player on your team, consider picking medic and following him. Chances are, you will make a bigger impact. You get a special reward called “Health Insurance” - for 10 seconds after reviving someone you get xp when they get xp.

What i love about being a front lines medic like Phoenix is that i don’t rely only on your friendlies to kill people and you can do a good job at it as well. And that’s sometimes the problem with being a med sometimes is that if your teammates are bad at your job and killing you may be on the top of the scoreboard but you ain’t gonna win. Other wise meds like sparks r just perfect for keeping the team up and long range sniping as well which is a bit funny. But it feels awesome when you get a couple of good players on your team and your the medic who revs them all and kill enemies here and there to protect them.

I think the highlights of Phoenix are:

  • easy to hit, no medkits used by enemies!!
  • heals himself as well as patient at the same time.
People overestimate the instant healing aspect IMO. Throw one too many medpack as Sawbonez, and it becomes an all or nothing situation. If enemy wins the duel, he’s fully healed.

I’m lvl8. Just played two matches against a lvl55 streaming yesterday. Managed to kill him a few times and maintain over 1 KD ratio. Our team was wiped. What did we learn? Not much. I checked the stream and the guy was playing the ugliest graphic setting of dirtybomb while listening to atrocious pop music and swearing a lot for his ten people crowd. So I dont blame this poor dick for playing the game and joining a sub lvl10 server.

(blisteringOwlNest) #12

@M4st0d0n yeah I’m currently looking at configurations myself, as they help play at max fps. So you did learn something from him

(M4st0d0n) #13

@blisteringNest No, quite not learnt that. Rather : If you want to stream with a potato, play Quake. I’m learning the game at my pace, I’m a bit worried by the number of leavers in comp mode but hey, nothing kills fun for now.

I think this is a good attitude. If you play someone significantly better, you’ll probably not get much practice shooting but you might learn about strategy or flanking. Honestly I think it’s been proven in sports you always need to play people better or much better than you but not massively better because at a certain point it’s counter productive.

Also you can’t judge the scoreboard just based on player level. I’m only a level 8 I think but I have been playing FPS games since Quake 1. Probably have 1,000 hours of CS (was playing since version 1.5), and 500 hours of Battlefield, not to mention all the other generic shooters.

Sometimes I will look at the scoreboard and think “we are so screwed” because we’re all level 5-10 against a team where half the players are 20+ and yet somehow we win. Then again, a lot of times when that happens we get stomped so…

(Boorseye) #15

Sometimes, lvl 1-10 players can beat players lvl 20 and above. The game is based on skill, so xp does not limit how good you can be at the game, which is great for a F2P game.

I once saw a player (before they nerfed the Stickies CD, XP and “reclaim”) got 20k XP each round using fletcher, just standing in spawn and throw 3 stickies out, reclaim them and insta throw them again. Did this 3 Games in a row, before finally he left (Yeah kickvotes we’re and in fact still are to hard to pass).

(AllosaurusJr) #17

This! When you fight someone higher level, don’t be salty you’re losing- instead take tips from them. I use this attitude in all sorts of games and it carries me to spaaace.

(sneak) #18

Sorry but level isn’t an indicator of skill. Just like XP wasn’t an indicator of skill in ET.

I would bet on there being skilled players of any level. I get accused of cheating all the time in this game and I think a large part of it is my level. I have had a few people mention my level in their accusations. People seem to not understand that level doesn’t equal skill.
