Enemy Territory Mapping Contest: ETGameHosting.com

(knuckles) #1

Purpose of the ETGameHosting.com Enemy Territory Mapping Contest:
The goal of the contest is for mappers to generate a new map in the spirit of competition and hopefully fun for all.
The Prize of the Mapping Contest will be a Private Enemy Territory Game Server paid for 3 Months by us for your own Map Testing development or Clan’s usage.
The Game Server will also come with voice server and all the extras that come with our servers. The server will be located in the Central US.

Map Storyline or Theme:
The map should fit into this storyline. The time set for the map is Winter during the Battle of the Bulge.
During the Battle of the Bulge the Allies have overtaken an area once occupied by Axis forces and setup a base camp with a communications center. They also have captured sensitive Axis battle plans.
The Axis troops must infiltrate the area the Allies are holding, gain access to the allied communications center and destroy it.
Somewhere in the Allied occupied area are the sensitive documents that must be recovered and taken back to a secure Axis position.

This map will have the Allies Defending with the Axis attacking.
There could be a spawn flag the Axis might capture during the attack. This is up to the mapper.
The Map should fit at least loosely into the above description.

Rules of the Contest:
The only real rules are that it has to be a new original map and follow at least loosely the story line theme of the map and it must be submitted by the Deadline of: March 15th
The Map itself will be judged by several people for map quality, creativity and general game play for the teams.
Somewhere within the map there should also be logos or references to ETGameHosting.com to help promote our site and services.

Besides our prizes the winner’s map will also be hosted on several gaming sites for download for other gamers use.

I hope that some people here will be interested in participating.

how many slots on the free server (you only go up to 32)?

Also, not to be rude, but you are basicallly asking for several custom maps to be made for the exchange of your services to the winner yet: (leaving you with several maps made for your servers but with only 1 winner)?

----Good for you, slightly cheating the community of the reward, I think.

(thegnat) #3

I agree with EB, tagging a map with logos is quite annoying.
Its the mapper, that gives his creativity and time onto such a project. It isn’t like you would pay someone for creating levels. Its a contest - a mappack with your sitename and a good readme file should also do the promotion job.

(detox) #4

I guess the mapps who don’t want to compete could just sit this one out.

Either way, should be fun and the themed stuff always goes over well.

(Ifurita) #5

I think this is a great idea. As far as banners and logoing go, I simply cannot see how this could turn out any worse than the mapper splashing his/her name across the command map in big 72-font, neon letters.

  1. You can insert banners tastefully and easily remove them if you don’t win.
  2. You could always stand on principle and submitted an appropriately themed map with no banners – probably won’t win

(knuckles) #6

Well you could put a little logo or banner on the map’s title splash screen when the map loads without it being on the side of buildings or something in the map.
Note that it says “it should fit at least loosely into the theme” the idea wasn’t to take away from the mappers creativity.
I understand that the prize might not be big enough for some folks however we hope that some people will want to participate.
We probably will have a 2nd and 3rd place prize of something we just haven’t figured out what exactly that will be yet.

The whole point of this was to encourage development of a new map and reward the mapper with a game server for map development and testing.

If this is something you aren’t interested in then we won’t twist your arm.

its a good idea. I think the dealine is a little short. Anyone with anykind of real life will have a hard time meeting that deadline. It might be better to say march 15th for first beta then april 15th for fully finished and tested final version.

(SCDS_reyalP) #8

I agree with bb, the time is a bit short. Also, specifying a beta deadline and a final deadline might help you get tested, completed maps. Perhaps you could even put all the beta entries in rotation on a server…

Some runner-up schwag would be good for sure.

A nice way to include a logo/promotion would be to turn it into something that looks like a period advertising/propaganda poster, and include it in the map.

(knuckles) #9

We will take the suggestion of march 15th for first beta then april 15th for fully finished and tested final version.
That sounds fine.

Someone else also suggested period art with our logos like on boards or posters but we don’t have anything like that at the moment.

We will have some runner up prizes they just aren’t decided yet.

(Ifurita) #10

How about something like:

or

(SCDS_reyalP) #11

My suggestion is that if you posted some links to etgamehosting.com banners or logos the mappers or other interested parties could make them into something that looked more like period advertising. I’d say they could just grab them from the site, but a quick look didn’t show me anything obvious to use.

edit
Yeah, something like that Ifurita

(knuckles) #12

Those are really nice

The only logos we have are standard web ad stuff nothing near to what is above.

(Oxygen - o2) #13

i agree with EB, i think your not giving much compared to all the maps and avertisement your receiving

BTW is the judges are 1337 competition players then i wouldnt be submitting a map, over my dead body!

(knuckles) #14

I don’t generally like 1337 competition players. If this is something that you don’t think you will enjoy doing then don’t participate. The advertising in reality we will get from this is pretty small.
We aren’t a huge company with tons of money. Now I’m starting to feel like we have mappers working in a sweatshop in a third world country somewhere

If this is not something you will enjoy then don’t spend your time on it. We hoped that a few mappers would like the idea of building a map based on a theme and be involved in it.

(Oxygen - o2) #15

no 1337 players then?

ill think of something

(Matt-J) #16

I agree with Knuckles here, not to start anything, but they ARE runnign the event, and they can do with it what they want… do you not think every othrr competition in the world is sponsored or hosted by a company isnt advertisign that they are doing it. You ar submittign a map for competition purposes, put hte logo in like Ifurita did, a very normal lloking poster wit hsome small tweeks… Just dont complain, casue u could go make a map for fun adn not haeva chance to win 3 months of free server space…

ROCK ON

(EB) #17

The fact of the deadline changes and the runner up prizes makes me smile(even if it’s a t-shirt) . Appreciation for the work that mappers will be putting in is something I felt it lacked. People would have joined in the fun anyways, but I am glad that we “who were unhappy” with the prizes helped you to conjure up the idea of runner up prizes for the Contest(as they were not previously stated). Not wanting the world; but making maps(lots’o’hours) is at least worth a runner up prize - ( if it is any good ) !!!

-Cheers and good luck to whoever joins in !!!
