Enemy Glowing

(DrJekyll) #261

Joe999. Fair enough. But im primarily concerned with the overall tactical level/experience of pubs. Pubs doesnt have to be synonymous with noob servers. Toggles or server toggles dont really address that. But i agree, Some Hardcores are always going to tweak for best visibility. Limiting that would be something to investigate indeed, but let’s focus on just one thing for now

On your last point, it is possible to perceive a strand of reality where a casual player purchases a console version and eventually becomes very skilled, hears that the PC platform is where the highest level players are so gets that version.[/QUOTE]

This is what happened with me with my Dreamcast and Quake 3 (not sure about the skilled part though).

(DrJekyll) #263

Thanks for the reply. Mine will be quick as its time to punch a leprechaun.

Its far from obvious to most, there are 13 pages to that effect.

Im very curious to hear more about the tactical trade offs. Visibility is a key skill to master in gunplay, so ditching that has got to be worth it.

Im sad to hear your position on consoles. I would be supremely upset if id spent years of my life learning the ind and outs of that gamepad thing, and youre telling them that they should graduate to pc in essense, if they want to continue to progress at high level. There are countless pro level fps console players that would disagree. Fairness accross all platforms i say.

(Schwarzeis) #264

Exedore, is the enemy glow toggable on the XBOX360 too?

so instead of PCs being able to use the power they have their game should be dumbed down to console level, because a bunch of people like aim assist and we think it’s called “aimbot”
now after spending years of our lives learning K/M we should now have to use controllers because some company will pay to have people compete on inferior machines

Activision putting up a $50,000 prize for a tourney, when they spent $200,000,000 on the launch ads for the game ain’t no real big deal

btw, PCs are superior gaming machines by a long shot

a good percentage of console games are played at 420 resolution, I like 1200 myself, consoles can’t even come close

(SockDog) #266

You’re putting words into his mouth. The fact is that the PC game and servers will be more configurable, have mods and new maps etc. This is the inherent strength of the platform and one reason why people “pay a premium” to game on a PC over a console.

As such it is the best system (playerbase numbers aside) to play on at a higher level. Specifically where a console player at a high level deems an aura as being noobish they may choose to play on the PC so they have the option to have it enabled or not.

(Mad Hatter) #267

I think he’s just saying that certain important features should be available on consoles as well as PC’s, not that PC’s should have fewer features to bring them down to console level. More about elevating the status of consoles, less about “dumbing down” PC’s.

(Beermachine) #268

This still going on, would have thought I’d all been said by now.

As for mouse vs controller, it’s just using the best tool for the job, like how a controller beats a mouse hands down for racing games and a steering wheel beats all.

Why use a shoe to bang in a nail when you can use a hammer.

(engiebenjy) #269

At the end of the day SD need to sell games, if someone picks up a controller they should just “know” how to play… like in dare I say it, COD?

The rim lighting is so players just “know” who to shoot, I admit for me its perhaps a little too heavy - but I know my friends who play games casually and they would without doubt need this. They want an easy ride, and if we are honest represent a majority of who will buy brink - especially on consoles.

(trigg3r) #270

Thank You!!

that’s all i needed to hear. 11 pages before would’ve been better though

DrJekyll: the major complain in this thread was that we don’t need the rim lighting and that it ruins the art style of the game, now that we know you can toggle it off, why are you still complaining?

(BioSnark) #271

good, thx.

(Mustkunstn1k) #272

Seems like if people whine hard enough anything is possible.
Good luck to those who actually disable it (after playing the actual game most of you will probably realise that it really isn’t that bad).

Anyway, thumbs up to SD for listening the community.

Finally this thread can be put to rest.

(Senethro) #273

Seriously, rim lighting is such a trivial detriment for those who don’t need it but so useful for the many who do that its pretty churlish to expect SD to cater to them, having so far done their best to make Brink as accessible as possible.

(Schwarzeis) #274

So… No answer on toggling off Rim Lightning on console?

(Mustkunstn1k) #275

Schwarzeis - Why would you seriously want like that? On PC you have high resolution and your face is close to the monitor. On the console you have 720p stretched out and you sit far away…

(DrJekyll) #276

Mad Hatter: exactly. *It can be a great platform too with highly skilled players. Don’t dumb down consoles, there’s no need.

To all else who have decided that toggling solves the issue, it hasn’t. Quite simply, we feel the default glow threatens balance and tactical integrity. If an individual player can toggle the glow, nothing is solved as people can use this system to gain an unfair edge. Yes, most servers will likely do away with this via server settings, and yes, it does seem like we’re making a mountain out of an anthill, but SD is the last bastion of solid, balanced, competitive gaming. We believe everyone who plays Brink should benefit from accessiblility, but also be guided towards challenging themselves as FPS players. The glow threatens that idea.*

Hopefully Exedore will explain what tactical advantages were gained by the glow.

Personally, i like the idea of attaching glow to the levelling system. It really limits abuse and still helps the people who need it. Thoughts Exedore?

Also, i appreciate your recent constructive explanations. Helps to know people are thinking.

(trigg3r) #277

who is “we” exactly? 'cause i only see you complaining after exedore confirmed it will be toggleable.

(Senethro) #278

You’re making the wrong, selfish arguements based on what YOU want. How would it benefit SD to make the game more inaccessible?

(Cankor) #279

I doubt I’ll play on any servers that have both off (unless of course that’s my last choice)

My assumption is toggle-able = server side variable, just because that’s the only way it really makes sense.

Like I said, I am more than willing to try it for awhile with enemy highlighting on to see how it works in practice, I’m pretty curious to see what it might add to the game (I can already imagine the negative part easiliy enough). That said, I’m glad to have it confirmed we’ll have the option to turn it off if we decide we don’t like it.

(Weapuh) #280

“We” seems to be the people who have the practical knowledge as to what these changes ACTUALLY mean rather than most peoples speculation of simple tactical advantage and aesthetics, saying it is “obvious so not really something we had to admit to.” is an extreme oversight imo.
Saying it’s selfish to argue this is just wrong imo, i believe the intelligent points brought up by all are not selfish for me it’s a matter of concern against the influx of games wedging the skill away from the player.
Cutting out console in a completely non-bias perspective is laughable as a solution for toggle option not that I care but DrJekyll said it best when he said “Ouch.”
