End of the mercs

Are Aimee and turtle going to be the last two mercs ever? Surely if there aren’t new character releases every couple of months wont the game slowly get boring?

The current state of the game is very enjoyable and there’s also a lot of hype over the new mercs. But if there aren’t going to be any more mercs wont people get bored after a while of playing the same mercs repeatedly?

No, they most likely aren’t. I know there’s another merc, Javelin, that could possibly be released (in the far future). Also, Mercs do very little to keep people playing. From what I’ve seen, and my own personal opinions, new maps, gamemodes, and events keep people playing. Maps and gamemodes being the really important ones. New loadout cards, skins, and tiers will also keep people playing more often as well.

We already have a lot of mercs. I believe we have 18 (correct me if I’m wrong). Aimee and Turtle make that 20. A possible Javelin makes that 21. That’s a shitload of unique characters to play with in an FPS game and even for a MMORPG.

It’s been agreed on many times now that we need new gamemodes and maps before anything (I’ve gathered this from previous polls). Added onto that, after reading a lot of posts and talking to people, a lot of people would like to see better maps as well as a community made maps. I know Splash Damage uses graphs and stuff for balancing and map-making, but a lot of people dislike this. It’s great that can be done, but less reliance on these tools would definitely help the game.

Like with that last major balancing update. A good chunk of it was pointless, and most, if not all of the data, was gathered from high-ranked competitive games. Very few people play competitive, even to this day, though it has grown finally. Most players play in public matches and disregard competitive. You can’t base a game around that if you want people to keep playing. It’s just my opinion, but although they’re trying to head in that “esports” direction, they won’t get very far if their playerbase isn’t maintained. There’s a lot of games on Steam right now that tried to focus on that esport direction, but lack a playerbase and therefore died. We still have plenty of players right now though, so this really all has no relevance.

-OKAY, I’M DONE NOW!!!

There’s gonna be more Mercs for sure. Here’s a little list of future and possible Mercs:

  • Aimee. Recon
  • Turtle. Engineer
  • Javelin. Fire Support
  • Falcon. Due to each class having an “animal” Merc (Rhino|Assault, Phoenix|Medic, Turtle|Engineer) there’s a high probability of them being a Fire Support
  • Mass Revive Medic. Hinted at by Shoe
  • Throwing Knife Merc. The throwing knife augment used to exist in the game, but its functionality lead to feel more like a new ability. If throwing knives are ever put back into the Dirty Bomb, chances are it’s gonna be for a new playable character.
  • CDA Merc? Probably gonna be an NPC rather than a playable character. Shown on Max Baschki’s Twitter.

A while back, the devs promised at having an equal ratio of male and female Mercs. Due to the lack of playable female characters, any new Merc that comes by will probably be female.

The only mercs that are currently unreleased and have been given full public acknowledgement by Splash Damage is Aimee and Turtle, although when asked previously on dev streams and the likes, they have also admitted to Javelin’s existance. He/She has been a long-time rumor as to what exactly their abilities entail, and thus far the only thing really confirmed is that he/she will have a rocket launcher of sorts (due to being found in the game files).

Falcon and the “mass revive medic” on the other hand were more tongue-and-cheek joking on the dev streams. While there is the possibility for pretty much anything in the future, I would not necessarily ‘expect’ these mercs, nor their abilities, in the future.

Throwing knives were removed due to their poor gameplay and clunky feel and are pretty likely never to return. They didn’t fit with the gameplay style of Dirty Bomb back then, so they most definitely won’t fit now.

CDA merc? Ehhhh… It’s possible, if they defected or something, but the Jackal vs. CDA storyline is in place and the mercs are essentially freelancers hired by the Jackals or CDA, so having a merc restricted to one faction would be a little odd. I wouldn’t say it’s out of the question though… but my guess would be that, that is a suit variant, not an actual merc

EDIT: Should also clarify, Splash Damage did say that merc releases will continue into the foreseeable future and that Aimee and Turtle are almost certainly NOT the last ones. They also expressed interest in combining the more stencil classes a little more (ie. medic, recon, assault, engi, fire-support).
