hey, just wondering about visual effects in the game (smoke, fire, etc). ET is pretty lacking in its effects department and we need to spice it up, those sparks u get from shooting dirt wont quite do :stuck_out_tongue: what files need to be modded? we are looking to add a bunch of new effects

Take a look at the sprites directory in pak0.pk3
All it does it take a bunch of images and play them in sequence to give you an effect.

yeah, sorry, i meant like the muzzle flash, fire, smoke, and other played effects. so everything is in sprites? if so, its time to bug my coders to write the ability to use different effects… cracks whip

I’m not sure if this is what you’re looking for, but in cgame, you’ll find cg_effects.c, which if I assume correctly controls the effects you mentioned. Sorry if i’m stating the obvious…

Aren’t the muzzle flashes animated shaders on a model?

Muzzle flashes are a .mdc file (.md3 works too)
they just get attached to the tag_flash of any weapon when its fired…
its quite quite simple to make a new replacment model

Enhancing the particle system from RtCW was one of the things we’d have loved to have done, but never got the time to get around to doing. If you can get one/some of your coders to put together a nice scriptable particle system, ( there are several mods out there which already do this for quake3 ( Q3F, tremulous ) etc, which you could take a look at for inspiration ), it should be alot easier to add really cool effects to weapons, explosions, and other neat things.

If we’d have had more time, i’d have moved alot more stuff out into script files, as it gives you so much more flexibility, and it doesn’t even need to cost you that much cpu time either. It’s one of the thing i’d suggest any mod that’s looking to do anything major with the game to do.
