Edge Online Looks at Balancing Brink
One thing I’ve been wanting to know.
If I respec at level 19 (rank 4) into level 18 (still rank 4) then will I be able to use my acquired coins to buy rank 4 abilities without having to buy rank 1 abilities? Or is it made so you need a certain amount of rank 1 abilities before buying rank 2 and so forth until rank 5?
Unless…
They made it affect the speed the game runs at, not the speed the character moves within the physics system.
You speed it up, everything moves faster, you mantle up walls faster, etc. But your jump height, distance etc. is identical. You slow it down and the world goes into bullet-time.
That would work without creating the “random environment” you’re talking about.
Would need to be limited in how far you can push it in either direction, though.
There is no reason why you would have to select rank 1 abilities when you are able to choose rank 4 abilities. The rank 1 abilities are among the most powerful, though (e.g. Health boost).
I think he is trying to figure out if there will be a point investment requirement tied to higher level abilities. Like in WoW (dont shoot me, well not until May 10th that is). You had to invest 5 points in the first tier of abilities to get access to the next tier. Basically, if you only wanted to put 1 point into medic and you just hit lvl 20, you could buy the Rez grenade (edit: self rez is a lvl 4 my bad).
Not sure if SD has ever commented on this, but I could see it going either way. Personally I hope they don’t have a point investment requirement, but it wouldn’t be any skin off my nose if they did.
edit: Hmmm, so guess you can only choose 1 rank 5 ability for your character.
edit2: self rez -> rez grenade
Hmmm. Wonder if you could:
- Level to 20
- De-level and get your skill points back
- Not invest them
- Get back to lvl 20
- Invest your skill points
- Profit with all your shiny rank 5 abilities.
But as Herander pointed out the low rank skills are the strength and the upper rank skills are the flavor.

Yeah that was basically what I was asking. Except I used rank 4 as an example so I wouldnt have to go through the process of explaining a lot.
If so you I’ll probably delevel after I reach level 20 buy certain abilities, reach level 20 and then buy a good share of rank 5 abilities.

The only prerequisites I know of are of abilities which come in increasing strengths. Like the Turret, you have to buy a level 1 turret before you can buy a level 2 turret.
Ya, agreed. The question is if you have to spend x amount of point into rank 1 skills to get access to rank 2 skills.
I personallly would design it that way, but then I don’t remember SD ever asking me either.
I liked that interview a lot. My only concern is when NA says :
I play on PS3 and what happens if everyone in the game has a really rubbish connection? My internet isn’t all that great so now im thinking that im gonna lag like hell a lot.
Brink is still gonna be the best game ever though. Thanks for the article :D
Because it’s 8 vs 8 maybe it won’t be as bad as you might have experienced with 24 or 32 player games.
[Strike]I’m not sure that this is the case anymore. I think once you reach the rank required for the second (???) or third (gatling) turret, you can dump the original turret.[/Strike]
I believe that there are only five rank 5 abilities. One for each class (Satchel Charge, Gatling Turret, Lazarus Grenade & EMP Grenade), and one Universal (Downed Fire).
Lower level turrets are still pre-reqs according to the Gatling description released on fb.
