Unfortunately this forum is not aimed at n00bs because of the lack of time and resources. I would recommend you try the follow link first, as it has alot of really useful tutorials and are well written.

I don’t see why someone can’t find the time to make a simple door tutorial, granted I don’t think that the people that actually work for Splash Damage should be spending their time doing this, but I’m certainly sure there are other people that know enough about making doors.

I know it’s quite basic but I just don’t see a downside to making it even easier for people to learn how to make maps.

Ok, Heres a tutorial for making a rotating door.

  1. Make the brush that will be used as a door

  2. Make a small brush that will be the hinge(only make one) in the middle of the doors height like this:
    oooo
    oooo
    booo
    oooo
    oooo
where o is the actual door and b is the small brush.

  3. texture the small brush with common/orgin texture

  4. select the door and the orgin brush

  5. right click in the 2d view and select func_rotating_door

And you have a rotating door!

I got everything except the first step, the rest makes perfect sense to me. You’ve got to turn your n00b knob up a little higher…

How do I go about getting or making a very simple door brush ?

I’m not even sure how to join two rooms, I assume I have to use something to remove the area where I want to join the two rooms…

(mort-malice) #9

Sorry. Any brush can be used for the door, it does not have to have any special properties.

I think this; http://www.wolfensteinx.com/surface/tutorials/rotating_doors.html tutorial (as Black Death posted) is considered a door tutorial.

I guess I am looking for something even more basic for total beginners. I just installed the editing software yesterday and started working with it. That means I don’t even know what a brush is or how to join two rooms.

So far I’ve made a room, textured all the walls, added a light source with a light texture, added the spawn point and the red and blue points, set the coordinates and tested it out. It’s pretty basic but learning how to do a door is a pretty big part, if I could make a door I could make a fairly rudementary map.

As I said it can’t hurt to help a guy out, maybe somewhere down the line we could be working on a map together, or you’ll be running around shooting someone in a map I made…

(mort-malice) #12

Ok, if you’ve made a working map then you’ve already made at least 6 brushes(those 6 being the walls, floor, and ceiling). So basicly when you make anything in SDradiant by dragging in one of the 2d windows its a brush.

Hope this helps

That helped a lot, I was able to make a door that opens. Now how would I go about making a corridor, I assume I would have to hollow out the area where the door is, as it is now the door opens but the wall is still there of course. I don’t know how to hollow out an area yet though.

I basically want to make my door go somewhere.

Thanks again that helped a lot.

What you might try is, with the room you already have, try deleting the wall you want the door and and make three brushes like this:

1111222233333333
1111222233333333
1111nnnn33333333
1111nnnn33333333
1111nnnn33333333
1111nnnn33333333
1111nnnn33333333

where each number is a seperate brush(n is nothing), then put the door in the hollow space.
then just add on as many more rooms as you want :drink:

(PM5K) #15

I see, that’s what I was working on, basically making the wall without the door (like you would in actual construction) rather than making the wall and taking the door out.

Am I on the right track ? I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the ammount of help I’ve gotten, I really didn’t expect to get help for a total n00b.

Thanks again.

(mort-malice) #16

Yep, looks like you’re on track.
I just started mapping around 2-3 weeks ago I’m still not great, but I can help other people getting started.

Since this topic is about doors the best hight ive found is 96 units, and 128 is good for a room hight as it lets u get a full jump.

Also if u can try build everything with the caulk texture. then paint/texture the parts of ur map, buildings that will show in game with crtl+shift.(selects 1 side of ur brush) That way… any hidden things that cant be seen dont draw in game helping the game to run faster.

Say u build a floor… only the top of ur floor will be seen in game. So u build ur floor with caulk texture then ctrl+shift and press the top of ur floor. and select ur floor texture. Now u should have a floor with 5 sides being caulk and the side u see being ur floor texture. In game this meens ur card will only draw the side u can see and dosnt draw the other 5.

I just build everything with the caulk then paint it once i feal i have finished it.

Also another thing that might help is. say u want to place a building onto ur open map.save ur map. Take a brush and make it the size of the bulding u want. then copy it. now open a new map and import the copyed brush. Now u have a floor plan for ur building :D. Just build away useing the floorplan as a reminder then once u have finished u can save it. then import the building into ur main map and move it into place :D.

Thanks for the tips. I was sure my units were off but I was more interested in learning how to build the room with a door, I figured I’d worry about units later, which is what I am looking at now.

Also I read about caulk over at wolfensteinx so I am going to do another map that way.

Basically everything made a ton more sense in those tutorials at wolfensteinx after more-malice explained what a brush was.
