Doom

Im just glad theyre bringing back the original designs. The first trailer was a massive disappointment because all of the monsters looked the same. Just hunks of meat with guns. The maps looked drab and monochrome AF and the sound track …ugh.

The newest trailer looked really god damn good though, and I hopped back on the hype train dick first when I saw that the baron is coming back. I loved those dudes.

In fact i got so hype that I made my D&D party fight them in a similar set up to the first time you encounter them in DooM 1. None of them are big gamers though so they didnt get it. -_-’

I just started Doom 1 Episode 4, and there are so many fucking Barons of Hell, I hate them now.

You doing brutal or pure? Brutal makes them a little easier to deal with.

Watching the trailer for DOOM just makes me want to play Killing Floor 2 until it comes out

I’m a bit weary of the kill animations, and the SnapMap thing, while possibly a cool novelty for the unwashed console masses is hopefully not the limit of what we’re getting for mapping. They are claiming how powerful it is, but it looks very much like a big Duplo kit in that you can only put down premade segments of existing levels. I’m still playing and mapping for Doom in 2016, and this is something id absolutely need to get right if they want this game to continue the spirit of the game they claim they are returning to. They are also saying how the MP will be a return to the arena…we’ll see.

I am still pissed at Bethesda about Quake Live and putting a price on it after like 5 years though, to the point I’m hesitant to support this game at all as a result. Bastards!

I think nothing will compare to the original Doom, that game was a revolution because it came at a time just after Wolfenstein 3D. Wolfenstein introduced the idea, Doom perfected the original first person shooter. While there were others before it, Doom created a whole genre.

No Doom game after that will ever come close, the only thing this new Doom can bring is the classic back, the watershed of bringing back Arena Shooters to the main stream. Stuff like Unreal, Quake, Tribes, all these games can make a huge comeback on PC, which would be a good thing imo.

Cause I think the best shooters in the genre are these Arena Style games, where realism is thrown out the window in favor of crazy fast action.

Dirty Bomb has it…but is still a bit too realistic with random spread patterns, movement hindering accuracy, etc.

I wouldn’t mind a slower ttk if meant more speed and overall a more fun experience.

But that’s just me, I’m just excited to see Doom return to it’s core, after the meh ness of Doom 3.

Brutal Doom and Project Brutality were my Doom 3.

Honestly, if you haven’t already I would advise loading up project brutality with maps of chaos and go wild. It maintains the original feel while adding in all kinds of chunky goodness. It feels like a legit sequel instead of trying to play with a flashlight.

I’m playing with Brutal Doom, and it really does make the game feel a lot more modern. Only issue is that the jump button makes it super easy to run through acid, and the ammo capacity for bullets are far too low, leading to ammo issues.

Once I’m done with Doom 1, it’s on to Doom 2, then Master Levels, Final Doom, and maybe Doom 3.

Of course Doom 4 as well.

See, I know that the devs of the new Doom game have openly said they took some inspiration from Brutal Doom, but the funny thing is that I can’t stand Brutal Doom at all. Call me a purist or whatever but the changes just really rub me the wrong way, like a cover of your favorite song, while I can appreciate the effort involved it’s like messing with something special. I find Doom is best as nudie as possible, in all its wallrunning, key grabbing glory. TCs are also great, but those distance themselves from the source material, rather than bugger around with it.

Besides, everyone knows if you want a really Brutal experience, you should be using Extreme Weapons Pack (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/combos/ewpack)

Hehe. Have fun with Final doom.

I understand completely. Im a huge fan of DOOM, if you couldnt tell that before me saying it out loud. I was born in 95, so really I should have missed it. However, my grandmother was a total nutcase and thought that 3 year old me should be allowed to play her favorite video games. My grandmother was metal as fuck.

The old school Doom is far from lost on me.

I can understand if you think it messes with pure Doom. That’s why I will play through Doom 1 and the rest purist after my initial Brutal Doom playthrough.

If you want a different spin on Doom, same maps but with different enemies and guns, there are some really cool packs you can use:

Project MSX (http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=25836) - Really cool futuristic guns that change the core gameplay but stays pretty familiar. Gives you a crysis-style suit with regenerating armor you have to manage and a really sweet HUD

AEons of Death (http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?t=20500&) - This adds sooooooo much new stuff into the game and randomises everything, it has enemies from all sorts of different games. Just awesome for a playthrough of the old levels

I’m very excited, mostly because the multiplayer looks like it’s going to be really good.

There’s no action based multiplayer shooters active these days aside from Quake Live, so it’s going to be a breath of fresh air to play a good action-oriented FPS game that’s not about “slow movement and strategy”, and Doom 4 multiplayer looks like its gonna be in the style of old school games. Its probably not going to be popular, but hopefully there’s going to be enough people that stick around to keep the multiplayer community alive. Wouldn’t be surprised if it died out like UT 3’s multiplayer did though…

Idk, Unreal Tournament 4 is doing well, and I expect it to do even better if it gets on Steam and is given the advertising it needs.

I think Arena Shooters are coming back to be honest, it’s just a matter of time now.

Depending on how you look at it, they never went away, have you tried Reflex?

I heff reflex, but the Oceania community is a little beyond what I would call nonexistant.

Unreal Tournament 4 is okay, but I think it needs a lot more work. Its definitely fun, but the mechanics aren’t as solid as in UT99.
It’s just a shame that the really cool wall jumping mechanic that SD introduced in DB is being wasted on Dirty Bomb, who the developers insist on slowing down and making tactical, instead of being in a fast-paced arcade FPS like UT or Quake.

UT2014 has walljumping, but it’s kinda wonky.

Quake isn’t the game for walljumping, that game relies on the hopping bugs found way back when, e.g. bhopping, strafejumping, etc.

Quake is heavily reliant on out-maneuvering your opponent, so wall jumping would work really well in it.
2014 didn’t get walljumping right, it just doesn’t work properly. SD got it right…but then decided that DB shouldn’t be about movement and fast paced combat, which is a waste of the wall jumping mechanic, since they only intend us to use it to move across obstacles in the map rather than combat.
