Do you feel being part of a community?

I just realized this and wondered how other people think about it.

I probably belong to the older players and have played video games in some form since I can remember. Throughout those years there were some games I really played excessively and if they were online games I have always been a member of forums or read up on news and so on. WIth some of those games I really felt being part of a community and with some of those games I didn’t. Even when I played them a lot. DB belongs to the second category. I am pretty sure DB is in my top 3 of games regarding playtime overall and intensity. I post here in the forums and participate in discussion. But again, I really don’t feel like being part of a community. I just feel like I am playing a game a lot.

I thought about it a bit and noticed that I had the feeling of belonging to a community was more often with games I played in my youth/early twenties (with some exceptions). So maybe I am just too old (that’s why there are age spans in the answers).

I have an inkling that this is not the only reason, but I wont state my assumption right now, to not influence someone.

So, do you feel, that with DB you are part of a community?

The poll is anonymous, as I know a lot of people are really careful with private data.

I’ve always felt like an independent individual.
Heck, we all should. We shouldn’t pick sides and fight each other like tribes (look at those AMD vs NVidia or AMD vs Intel morons, or CoD baboons vs BF monkeys). Or even jump on bandwagons.

Bee hive mentality is a bad thing, the world needs to be colorful with free thinkers.

If you really want a community feel you can attempt to check out the official Discord. It’s very active.

I think it’s just games in general now. Getting older might be a part of it, but people seem to approach games differently now. Less likely to obsess over it and whatnot. It seems to be more of a recent change so maybe I can’t speak for much, but take Skyrim and the Witcher 3 for example.

Both Skyrim and the Witcher 3 are fairly similar games conceptually. Both are great games, both have a community, but Skyrim’s seems to be considerably larger, even after all this time. Hell, just look at the nexusmod page for both. The Witcher has 10 new mods this week, Skyrim has 10 today alone.

I’m not sure why, but people just don’t seem to form the same attachments with a game. There are still communities, they just don’t have nearly as many super-dedicated members as they once did.

I still definitely feel part of a DB community though. I mean, when you know 1 in 10 players you run into in a match and comment so regularly on the forums, it’s pretty hard to argue otherwise, lol

This resume pretty well my feelings.

I sometimes encountered players which I know by their nickname, in rarer times I saw people from this forum (when they carry the same nick, encountered @STARRYSOCK once for example) and it’s somewhat fun, but there’s nothing more. I even have friends in steam that play Dirty Bomb too, because we added ourselves after some matches but ended up close to never playing with.

But maybe all this comes only from me. The language barrier is a hard frontier. Sure I can read and write easily in English, I’m able to watch videos or movies without having to activate subtitles but I’m bad when it comes to oral conversation. Sure, it’s something I should work at, but not that easy when you don’t even recognize your own nickname pronounced with a foreign language  (For info, it’s pronounced P-tee-loo-ee  )

I guess with age you learn that all that enthusiasm is put into… well just a game.
That’s why most older players are less likely to just rage at their computers because it’s just a game.

There are games with bigger (and frankly more accepting) communities, and there are times when you just get pissed off at people for some petty reason. But when I look through these forums, take a gander at the meme page, or when we all collectively scratch our heads at @TheStrangerous threads, I can only appreciate that this feels unique. It’s small enough for us to have inside jokes within inside jokes, but its big enough for people to create a new account make a few posts and then slowly but surely feel like there part of something.
Maybe it’s just my youthful optimism, but I really appreciate these forums and what is going to become of it in the future.

Dirty Bomb community is the only community where each individual can be herd. And after typing community so much I want to watch Community TV show again. I appriciate all the people here on this forums even @martha_smith. And @TheStrangerous is awesome.
