Do I play phantom properly?

(Dysfnal) #1

I use the cloak in open areas away from where people are usually looking, and when I have a group of teammates in front. I don’t cloak when I’m behind the enemy team, and I wait for their entire spawn to pass before I give chase. I rarely use my gun from behind unless it’s me and them. I always finish even if it kills me, literally. I very rarely lunge with the katana. I do use my gun (albeit less often than I should). I actively flank.

I’ve only had 2 godlikes, one of them was with phantom within the last week

(Grave_Knight) #2

No, no, you’re doing it wrong. You’re suppose to chase the enemy with only your sword, in full view, from the front. What is this flanking and using your gun?

(Dysfnal) #3

And is it just me, or should phantom have mechanic on more of his cards?

Idk if he even has any, but they’d be great

(TheSeer) #4

He might get some with the 2nd Gen cards. We’ll have to wait and see.

In answer to your question, personally, I use his gun more often than the katana, unless I know I can guarantee a kill with it. I prefer to flank and find people who are out of position or come in from behind them.

(Dysfnal) #5

@Seer I sure hope so, it would be one of his best augments.

Also that’s basically how I play him, bridge is inherently my best map because of those people who love to snipe from the overwatch behind the barricade generator, easy kills

I suggest watching the dev’s Merc Role Calls. They have one for every single character.
Seriously though:
[] Step 1. Forget your katana exists.
[
] Step 2. If the previous step is too difficult; acquire a katana-less loadout card.
[] Step 3. Play like every other merc that has to shoot their gun to make a living.
[
] Step 4. ???

Step 5. Profit.

@Incoming the katana does have its place, trust me, I struggle against fraggers of I’m using the KEK, but the katana I can pull off

(Dysfnal) #8

Also, if you’re playing phantom, don’t sprint while cloaked, it’s unnecessary and will usually get you killed

(Amerika) #9

This is my own video but it’s relevant.

(KattiValk) #10

@Dysfnal Going full on slasher on a Fragger is kind of pointless. The only times I can say I’ve ever really felt the need to have a katana are when I have very little ammo left and I need to drop multiple people so being able to right click someone down to low/kill them means I can have enough bullets for the next guy. Maybe you need to improve your aim?

@Amerika I swear, your tracking looks so much like mine; it’s unnerving.

(Dysfnal) #11

@Incoming I do need to improve my aim, that is true, but Fragger is a merc you can run circles around with phantom, which makes the three swipes it takes to kill him easy hits. Most Fraggers I’ve played don’t have the cqc aim to deal with me, though I have fought against Amerika, and was thoroughly anhiliated by him. (I wasn’t playing phantom though) Fragger also can’t backpedal faster than you, which is very helpful

(Naonna) #12

Phantom can EASILY be seen under his cloak while sprinting. toggle sprinting off while under cloak to move around with a bit more ease.

Play freeze tag with enemies once they know you’re around. Standing still after sneaking behind (if you have the meter for it) will cause deaf players to walk right past you: netting you easy kills if you shoot them in the back.

The only issue with that tactic is that between fights, you have to wait roughly five to ten seconds for your cloak to recharge, depending on the distance traveled.

(Dysfnal) #13

@Naonna I never sprint while cloaked, and I reap the benefits, only the most experienced players seem to see me consistently, making flanking very easily done, though phantom definitely needs a buff to his invisibility IMO you can have success with him as he is

(JJMAJR) #14

I play Phantom defensively. Stay in a defensive position and wait for enemies while cloaked. Unfortunately the cloak duration is extremely short, not to mention the noise, and thus it’s nearly impossible to reap the benefits of such a cloak.

IMO, Phantom should be buffed so that his defensive abilities can be more useful. Comms Hack, which best works when your team has a strong defensive position, would be extremely useful to this end.
