DLC level cap raise - Why it shouldn't be done
I get your grief here but no one makes you play with higher leveled people, you can choose to play your rank and below only, or your rank and above. Also the things being added arent that over the top and for anyone 20 or higher and besides i have joined many of matched lower ranked then others and I never had a huge problem cause of others being ranked to high. …
Yeah, I haven’t really had a problem with this in Brink so far, but if they keep adding more levels, that will likely change.

What happens after they raise the level cap? What happens when DLC #2 raises it again? Now all of a sudden I’m to a point where it’s going to take me a month or more just to level a new character. And I don’t really want to play a crippled game with only other characters of X level. It’s just not fun. I want to play in a game full of completely maxed characters that have access to all the abilities and weapons. That’s where the game is “balanced”. That’s the game as it is intended to be played.

And that’s the game I want to play. It’s just really annoying that in addition to buying the game, there’s this little stipulation that “oh yeah, you also have to put in 20 hours of grinding before you’re allowed to play the full game.” And now, a month later, we’re going to extend that amount of time, because we don’t feel that there are quite enough hoops for you to jump through before we allow to you play the full game.

Leveling and unlocking in a multiplayer competitive game is nothing more than a barrier to entry. I presume it’s there to hold the attention of the ADD crowd, but I don’t know. I do know that it will drive me away because when I have a few spare hours to play games, I want to play. I don’t want to have to do “virtual work” to earn the right to play.

As I said, I’m OK with it in Brink as it is now because I can deal with the relatively short period of it as is. It’s disconcerting to see that the very first major update is going to add nearly 20% to that phase of the game though. Leveling works in an RPG, where the journey IS the game. It has no place in a competitive multiplayer game though, in my opinion.

Beat me and my team with your superior skills, not with your superior “hours played award”.
No i didn’t. Levels are there for keeping MMO people like you interested in the FPS game.

Levels are there for noobs to team oriented class based games to promote them to start with just one class and learn the overall game while at it, not getting confused with too many things. Hope that made sence to you since my English sucks.

You have to love it when you think someones logic is flawed when your own logic just failed, what now, you hostile little punk kid?
Huh? I’m all for unlocking a fixed number of points at the start to keep things balanced. I couldn’t care less about the RPG aspects of the game and actually think that Brink’s skill system is quite lacking. Also, there is a difference between newbs and n00bs.

If you are worried about your English then why insult me with unfounded comments? Chances are that I am older than you so the ‘kid’ remark is entirely ignorant. The point is that if you want to unlock everything so why bother including levels at all? They simply make balance that much harder to maintain. There is no flawed logic involved.

You were there first to ridicule how my logic failed, when in fact it didn’t. I gave you fair enough reasons for there to be Levels even though i want you to unlock everything at the top level. That’s a huge difference to no levels at all. If you don’t see that and ridicule me about my logic, that in fact is a terrible failure in logic, right there. I SAID you are hostile, a kid and a punk because of the reasons above. I know kids nearing and over 30 years old.

If you fail to understand this, there is little more i can do. Have a nice one countering everything other than your own opinions, son. You have much growing to do.

Increasing the levels only makes it that much harder for newer players to be able to compete against the higher level ones. It makes balance that much harder to maintain and in the end has the exact same result as unlocking everything from the start, especially if the end goal is to unlock everything (at least that is what you said you wanted).

As for your justification regarding your insults, well, only my nephew resorts to calling people names though but he’s 9 so I give him a little more slack. Besides, you still have absolutely no idea how old I am yet you feel the need to embetter youself by making me sound young. Whatever it takes to make you feel better about yourself I guess.

That would make the balance easy to maintain, but it would also make the game incredibly bland.

I kinda like the idea I read in an earlier post that proposed giving more abilities as opposed to levels, and not enough points to buy everything cool for every class. . . and what could make it even more of a challenge ( and incentive to create lots of new characters ) is if the program randomly chose what class you were going to be for that match. . . but I know that will never be . . . it’s to inherent to the game that we choose, and change, our classes by our own decisions.

And yet Counter-Strike is still quite popular due to its balance. It’s a complex issue but making it unfriendly towards new players never helps the community to grow.

(tokamak) #48

As far as I understood counterstrike doesn’t have everything unlocked at the start.

It’s been a day… you’ve been called out by a dev to post where they said this… I’m curious too. Well?

Seriously. I’ve already got three level 20s and a level 17 (and a level 1, because I got tired of being told my “level was too high” to join friends’ games).

As you can see in my signature, I hope to have all 10 character slots used, with significant differences in each character. Once they’re all maxed, I’ll probably won’t use them all regularly, but they’ll be nice to have in the wings, and it will give me a chance to play differently on each of them (though I admit, I focus on Medic abilities to move up the levels faster, then respec at level 18 or 19 or 20). If someone’s only using one or two characters, perhaps they need to mix up their play style a bit more.

Personally, I kinda wish there were enough levels to max out all abilities on one character (or maybe a few less levels than that to encourage a couple strategic choices). Then I could actually have a fully versatile character (or three, one for each body type). If the objective calls for an Operative, and there’s none (or only one) on my team, I’m not going to be as inclined to switch over if I’m using an Eng/Medic character. Why would I want to play with a gimped Op? And no one wants to play with gimped teammates. So the OP claims that they could just use the extra points to pick the “best” skills for other classes, like an extra mine and improved weapon buff. What? You’re running around as a level 20 Engineer and you can’t buff my armor? Lame. Iif you’ve got left over points, spend one on CP Firewall and CP Upgrade. Even if you can’t do any other abilities, at least you can swap over and buff your CP and then swap back.

And I really don’t see how this would result in everyone having the “same” character, because even if you’ve got all the abilities, everyone’s going to play differently; everyone’s still going to have their preferred class.

P.S. Oschino, your friends list is full. I don’t always use a mic (wired mic + 10mo son = bad news… and I admit I feel pretty goofy talking to my video games when my wife is watching TV next to me), but I’m a team player that knows what I’m doing, so if there are any inactives on your list that you don’t mind booting, add me up.
