DLC level cap raise - Why it shouldn't be done

(Qbix) #1

Hello there.

I read about the DLC some days ago and had time to think about the information you gave. After comparing what will come and what is already here I’d like SD to rethink the level cap raise. I dunno if I am pretty much alone with my opinion or not, but I think the 20 levels are already a bit too much for the available abilities in some way. E. g. if you play medic for example, you can pretty much skill most of your abilities and take the most important general abilities and you will still have enough points to spare to get the “most important/interesting” abilities of the other classes as well (e. g. improved weapon buff, medium/gatling turret, caltrop grenade and control turret, flashbang and something else and there you go)

Result of this is, that the only reason to start a new character is the outfit, which is not motivating enough imo. I’d rather like to have less points to spend to be motivated to create another character with different abilities. If you would only implement the new abilities via the DLC without raising the level cap it would be nearly perfect. Because the way it looks now I will just spend the new 4 points on the new abilities I think are worth it and have pretty much everything again. That’s not part of the customization idea at all, everyone will have the same abilities in the end. 20 points would be cool to spent if I had 5 new abilities to chose from, would make it harder to decide and more motivating to start a second char.

(I think it’s unnecessary to say that when playing BRINK in a competetive way, the number of classes I play is further reduced to 1, so I don’t even need to spend points in different classes at all, leaving me with a handful unused.)

i think the points are distributed in the way that you can fully spec out 2 of the 5 categories, with 2 points left over.

Probably, but it’s fact that you don’t need every single ability to be a player useful to a team. Like I already said, it’s possible to play medic well without skilling everything in the general and the medic tree, so you have many points to spend on the other classes. A soldier is needed for Ammo and flashbangs - Satchels are too hard to use in tense games, especially in competetive ones and everything else is for the soldier only and doesn’t really need to be skilled if it’s not your main. Same goes for engineer - turret, improved weapon buff, probably second mine, that’s it if you have to switch. Operative - probably control turret and caltrop grenade.

Now, I have a medic with all abilities I need, but if I am bound to switch to another class (public or competetive) I can play with those as well. That may be fine to the degree it is now, but it’s almost too easy already. Adding 4 levels while adding 5 abilities isn’t going to solve it. Just adding the abilities is. If that would be the future, you would really have to stick with two classes later on, thus be bound to create at least a second char.

i’m kind of on the fence with this one, yes the abilities is a interesting point but just being able to go up levels is fun , striving for the next level is fun, it really needs more guns, and guns that require levels, like all the guns are right there off the line, the abilities are a minimal advantage the weapons make a huge difference to who wins a fight, so unlock-able weapons will make DLC much more interesting to me. but ur point is interesting,

I posted on the BethSoft forums already, but I agree.

New abilities are great.

But increasing the level cap by almost as many levels as we have new abilities will reduce the variety of different tactics and builds available at the top levels.

I’d rather have more abilities and no increase to the level cap - makes deciding what to buy a more critical decision.

(Rubbaduren) #6

I think that not every ability should cost the same amount of credits. Because I agree, it should be different builds. Making another character just because you don’t like the tattoo you chose? Can’t see people having more than 2 chars :stuck_out_tongue:

(tokamak) #7

You’re spot on.

Raising the level cap will only make the builds look more and more similar. It makes this one aspect really shallow as there are no tough or meaningful choices to make.

The entire system wasn’t right from the start. I’d rather see talent trees like in WoW.

Agreed.
10char

Keep the leveling to unlocking outfits and weapon attachments, and I’m all good.

Because I fully agree. The ability to make 10 different characters would truly shine if you’re somewhat forced to make them all unique (by abilities standards)

(felismenari) #10

I’m not against a level cap increase, but 4 additional levels when you only get 1 new ability per category does seem a bit much. Once the DLC rolls out I won’t have much of a choice to make for my Soldier/Engineer character. I should have just enough points to acquire all skills between the two classes, including the new ones.

Sounds to me like once again like many are upset because the new DLC and level cap doesnt work for the way THEY WANT TO PLAY. Sorry but i have 3 characters all 20s and i plan to make more. Dont blame the game cause youre a lame ass and dont want to explore other abilities and body types. Now I agree that many more will have the skills topped off but when everyone can do it how is it unfair or not good.

Like i said just because 4 more levels are useless for YOU or keep YOU from making more characters doesnt mean everyone feels the same. I know many players with 3 or more and its only been a few weeks and pretty much all are hyped to be able to top out their guys skills and make them more defined as their mostly all dual class players. Sorry but guys like YOU who only pick the few “important” skills and nothing else bother me when you piss and moan about things liek this because its obvious you are not even attempting to use and try the other abilities and failing to use them to their full advantage for your team, now you may be able to get away with it with a good team and good play but honestly all abilites have a good use and reason and just because you fail to understand, like or fully utilize them YOU label them as useless.

Let me guess most of you dont switch around body types or pair your classes/skills with diff body types for different kinds of play, just switching up body types makes it like a whole nother character. Yes you can switch skills and body types whenever but why do that when you can make each way you want to play a Permanant character so its just a quick change rather then redistributing points over and over or having your guy look stupid cause he wasnt meant to have a certain body type. Also as many of ALL OF YOU forget is most of these new ablilities are one of only 3 you can choose so you will have to decide what you do or dont want, you cant have everything set all the time!

Basically as with many ofther complaints, enough complaining cause it doesnt fit your style or what your doing in the game. For many of us, mostly those loving and enjoying the game for all it has to offer and fully utilizing all of those things available this is all a more then welcome addition. You dont want to play that way then dont, keep playing your lame as balls way with 1 maybe 2 characters using the same couple of abilities all day. Me and my friends will be making more and more characters all specialized for ever type of situation and game type and all with unique looks.

Play the way you want and leave everyone else to play the way they want, DONT try to change things just to make yourself happy when so many others think its just fine the way it is. Splash Damage already had the brains to think of and put things in this game that have never been done or rarely seen in this genre before so i feel we can trust everythign they do has a rhyme and a reason behind it and it ALL fits into the way this game is MEANT to be played. You can player however the heck you want, just keep doing that, and allow others to do the same.

(BuzzNot.V1) #12

Its just funny because they said they would not do this.

(raib) #13

This game should not have leveling or unlockable abilities and weapons in the first place. Add some depth to the gameplay instead of resorting to cheap gimmicks like this to increase replay value.

(St NickelStew) #14

Personally I rather like it, because it makes it easier for me to create a character that is very good in two different classes.

It makes it easier to create a jack-of-all-trades character, also.

(Tetra) #15

Level cap increase = good

Riot shields = bad

With four extra coins it’s easy to create a character that is good in all classes.

(Tetra) #17

No, it wouldn’t be. It seems like you people thinking a level cap increase would be bad don’t know anything about Brink.

(Kalbuth) #18

then educate us… your argument currently is rather void

(St NickelStew) #19

I think you can make a character who is adequate in three classes with the extra abilities. Or you can almost spec out two complete classes, which I think is the better choice.

(tokamak) #20

Uhm. Okay.
