Distant smoke effects

Hi all,
What is the best way to achieve smoke thats in the distance?
I’ve tried the obvious and put smoke entities in, but i have to push out the boundaries of my map considerably.
Could you perhaps put them in a skybox or can some fancy shader work do it?
Maybe there’s a map where this is done?

Sky-portal entity perhaps.

perhaps make it same way as fire? 2D animated sprites. it will look flat but…

I looked for sky-portals, wasn’t much and what i did find i didn’t really understand. Know of any links that could explain this?

Also, when i say in the distance i only mean a few streets away. But unless i place the smoke thing a lengthy way from the map, it looks like it’s coming directly from behind the building.

I thought about the fire and water, but i don’t see how i can get smoke to rise up and fade out. Wouldn’t putting it on a cone or even a semi-circle-ish patch make it look less flat?
