Disadvantages to Bumpmapping

I know how to do bumpmapping, and the advantages are pretty obvious (when used right), but I don’t know what the disadvantages are to using them.

Looking at 3 of the official maps, none (seem to) use bumpmaps, and I was wondering why not. In Goldrush for example, everything is lightmapped and would surely look nicer with bumps without there being any change in performance? Or is it just that it takes more time and isn’t noticable enough to be worth doing?

Usually to get a nice bump mapping effect you have to decrease the lightmapscale for the brush. This creates the drawback of increasing the size of the lightmaps. Other than the filesize increase, I don’t know of any other drawbacks (except possibly a longer light compile time).

Yep, they look way too blurry before increasing the lightmapscale. Didn’t think about the filesize though, hmm. I’m already battling to keep the size acceptable and I’m nowhere near done yet, looks like I’ll have to seriously rethink using them.

Thanks!
