Disabling Private Messages Completely

(Dannee) #1

Hi Guys.

Im from a NQ server where we are having major issues with rcon exploits etc and we think we can cure it by setting the private messages completely.

However we cant get “set g_privateMessages 0” to do the business.

Are there any other possiblities to disable pms completely?

Regards

that cvar should be the right one, did you restart the server after changing the setting?

(Dannee) #3

Yep.

Any other ways you guys can think of?

(macbeth) #4

yes it is this one but you cant now anymore sent messages for your members when they are around
hope u use TS or ventrilo

… just to be sure (don’t be cross with me)

… have you set it via config instead of using rcon?
… did you restart your server via start/stop instead rcon?
… check your config(s) for another/second entry

Try turning of callvote if you want to fix that rcon exploit, i’m pretty sure PM has nothing to do with rcon exploiting.

(Undead_fly) #8

The callvote exploit was (supposeably) fixed with nq 1.2.7, what version does your server run?

(hellreturn) #9

IMO disabling PM will not fix rcon exploits. Just update to latest version of the mod.

NQ 1.2.7 has rcon exploit fix and even latest Etpub too. Best way is to disable rcon completely.

i guess he is afraid that his players will be forced to download +20 mb of new nq update, wich is ‘a lot’ for et… don’t forget that usually these people are streaming hq videos on youtube and are watching +700 kb png screenshots for the maps.

(Shownie) #11

If it will solve the problem, isn’t it worth to update? I thought that was the point with updates, it is better than the old version, in this case even safer.

You can easily advertise on your server (maybe website?) that your players can download the latest nq and then they don’t need to to it on the server (often slower).

Good luck anyway

it is worth, but most people doesn’t see it this way.

20 MB is nothing these days…
Wake up man.
btw: it is a one time event. Just click that download button, and meanwhile watch that 40 MB streamed HQ video…

Updating software is common practice.
If a newer version is better, because they have fixed things, then most people update their software. (i say “most”, but it’s only what i think/believe/assume. I’m not really sure, of course, but i just say it like it’s the truth)…
Though, many ET people are still stuck in the Windows 95 era with their game software… silly. Amazing how so many bugs fit in such a small program…
I never understood those people that want something fixed, don’t update, ask for help on forums, try different hacked versions to workaround their problem(s), etc etc… They spend more time on trying all ^^that^^ than it would take to update ET, and/or download a new MOD…

To (sort of) quote a part of Your last post:
“most people don’t see it”

there is one possible excuse that i could accept - custom server content has to be reworked. like for example (not sure about versions), nq 1.1.1 mods didn’t work properly after upgrading to 1.2.3. u had to change the models path, some sounds etc but still, if mod was ready then it was no more than 4-5 hours of working with not being in a hurry.

updating et is a must, and it’s not painfull. look at cod5 - u have to download 7 patches, the total size is like 2 gb, u have to download them from sites like filefront, where u have to register first, wait in a queue, then download it… of course u could find some unofficial mirrors but they are often not fast enough.

Best is new BC2. Each player is forced to download update. Now no more lazy or uneducated people can say hey I don’t know how to do this and that.

He can also run 5Mb Etpub mod if server slots are less then 32.
