So after a great test cup using the “1 Merc Rule” setup by the guys and girls over at DirtyCups.gg I thought it would be a good idea to upload the VoDs I recorded. Apart from the Grand Final, these games are all solo casts by myself. Hope you enjoy. The following VoDs are all 1080p and 60fps.

The good parts were when you and Inferno were saying everything that was interesting to the listeners, deep strats, predictions, calling out important plays and specific players doing interesting stuff.

The bad parts were when FishStix started speaking over everyone in an extremely loud and excitable voice to say something completely unprofound, and when Oen would say or type something completely inappropriate and unrelated to the match, followed by an awkward silence.

Loved PixelTwitch comments. He really talked about strategies etc… good stuff!

(PixelTwitch) #4

Hey thanks guys!

Was a lot of fun and I look forward to doing more in future.
However, feel free to blast me down if you see something I am ****ing up badly

Cheers

This is so true we need casters who know the game and know the players like pix + inferno not ‘generic esports caster #7
Also less time talking about really basic fundamentals and stuff like ‘this game is really fast paced!’
Talk about what’s actually going on in-game, if you go off on one tangent because the game is so fast you miss the actual important plays which create pushes or shut them down etc. Like really there were a huge amount of important plays not even registered by the casters and that’s across almost every match I watched.
Also more first person camera work for sureee I get what you were trying with the free cam but it’s not really working out, as a spectator I don’t get much from it I just watch the names on the left and right of the screen to see who gets picked off anyway.
Other than that it was enjoyable to watch keep up the good work + thanks for the effort

i havent seen the stream yet but you need BOTH. If you only have casters talking about the indepth strategy, you will lose out on the crowd that doesnt even know how SW works in the first place.
Typically, a good 50/50 balance of Dr. Strategy n Cpt. Obvious works very well for casting, be it CS, Starcraft, QL or LoL

Hey Titan,

The problem with the tangents is mostly down to the multiple casters at the moment. If you see the solo casts that happens a lot less where something is missed. When it comes to the rest of the feedback (First Person Cams and What Classes As Important Plays) what you say is very valid but also one of them things that is very subjective. Infact, if you was to read the comments and stuff on the other thread I posted videos I have around a 50/50 mix of people asking for more free cam and other people asking for more first person. I doubt this is ever going to be something we will be able to get right for everyone, however we will certainly be able to refine the transitions between the two, get better free cam spots to watch from and recognise the subtle signs that a big player action is about to happen. So hopefully we will see that improve with experience. Also when it comes to First Person vs Third Person. We really could do with some more features in the spec mode cause now when the person your specing is downed or gibbed it just stays their or follows them back to spawn if they respawn. Due to the pace of the game it can be difficult to keep ontop of big fights in first person unless you manage to select the player that wins really. I will certainly attempt to get quicker on them hot keys though. One other problem with the first person cam is the sync is awful and it often looks like your shooting 10 meters to the side or are totally dsynced with aim. Hopefully this is something that SD can improve and maybe the addition of hit sounds and stuff would help.

When it comes to the “missing plays” I both agree and disagree, mainly because like the camera positions I find its quite subjective and its all too easy to get in the bad habbit of just reading the kill feed, getting hyped then watching the whole team be revived and basically the big play ends up being nothing but a loud bark with no bite (if you know what I mean). Again noticing this subtle hints and reacting quicker to picks will help this a little bit but also the players will help a bit when strats are being executed very well. Quite a few times we will call a huge pick that SHOULD lead to a push but then nothing happens.

Now I could be completely wrong, I will need to go back and watch all the VoDs again when I get chance, however, I don’t feel like I missed many of the big plays that resulted in real progress being made. Honestly, I think the only time I am really guilty of that is on EV objectives but I do try. I would like too see if you could link me to some of the plays I missed when/if you get time so we can break it down to see what is going wrong. Obviously I want to improve in all this casting stuff and I am sure the others do to!

Honestly, it sounds like you want a hybrid between Inferno and Fishstix when it comes to the casting really. More of a play by play with the odd bit of detailed play. So maybe that’s something they could do together cause I don’t really fit in that middle gap too well. Thanks a lot for the feedback dude

EDIT: Just watched the BM vs F8 game again, was pretty bad to be honest :stuck_out_tongue:

Didn’t watch it live, only the final video on youtube.

Thinking in terms of that single video, would of been nice to get an introduction to know who is who when they speak. In terms of the streams you may have done that at the start of the night but at the start of each match for new viewers would be cool. I guess for youtube a generic introduction could be recorded and added at the start. Also some chat about the new rule in place for those that weren’t aware.

Having not played a match I’m not sure if at the start it gives a run down of the map like in sw but for new players it maybe really helpful. Especially as it is in closed beta still. So not sure if this is a server setting by SD or something edited out in the videos.

Overall enjoyed the video, maybe the prompt for the cheeky plug for subs could have been more subtle but it worked as intended so meh! I would say the general chit chat was very informative, flowed with the game.

On the match note, is it just a coin toss to decide the decider with the winner of the toss choosing?

(prophett) #11

Is the finals match available on youtube yet? (I know it’s on twitch but I can’t watch that while at work).

(FishStix) #12

Regarding my casting - I try to break it down for the newbies. Yes, I am a bit of a newb myself. The competitive scene isn’t going to grow if we only cater to the hard core, so I try to speak to a wide audience and bring the hype more than give in-depth analysis.

Yeh - might not be the best for the hard core initiated. We’ll get better at this as time goes on though

btw It was funny to watch the chapel match v586 against .ini, you said we were rotating skyhammers, but only outc1der was using it at any point of the game

(PixelTwitch) #14

yup its the first video in the list

(PixelTwitch) #15

haha I did think that but I was not certain because inferno called it so I thought he saw it happen. I think because as spec we see all airstrikes as enemy airstrikes it just seemed there was a lot on the EV during a short period of time

Yo pix I just watched a few of your vids where you cast alone (had only seen some of the dirtycups vods) and they were really good think I preferred them to the main casts. Much better camera work + you made some really insightful points which go under the radar when 4 people are casting
One that stood out for me was in the ini vs lobby boyz match where chicken goes lower luggage on the first push instead of balc and you correctly speculate that it’s because we expected a luggage push to counter chicken up there in the first place so it’s an interesting back and forth meta game which you picked up on… was cool to see :]

I also asked our team to rush you on terminal too, but we went from forward as soon as i saw chicken sniping under. #Surprised.

Found it later last night when I revisited the thread and was eventually able to watch it on a ****ty satellite internet connection.

Nice cast with good insight. I think Ceres suggested somewhere that rather than cramming a bunch of casters into single cast have 2 separate casts covering multiple matches.

A nice mix of “Dr. Strategy and Captain Obvious” as someone else mentioned is a necessity for new and experienced viewers. I think yourself and Inferno are the best candidates for the insight/strategy breakdowns.

On another note, .ini needs to put their fragger on point with the sniper making picks (see white chapel final defense setup), having a proxy/fragger seperated from both medics (fallback on Terminal), and some other things

Going to watch the other casts tonight (if possible).

Totally agree with this point of view, especially whilst the game is still new and building an audience. I thought Inferno did a great job of providing insight that was useful to players at both ends of the spectrum.
