Dirty Bomb on Linux ?

(Eox) #1

I just wondered if it was possible to play Dirty Bomb on Linux. If yes, how’s the in game experience quality ?

I am more and more thinking about switching to a “full Linux PC” sooner or later (so no more Windows dual boot), and I also have a friend who needs an operating system for his computer. So I need to know if it’s possible for us to play our favourite game.

Does it even support OpenGL? Why not just test it out on your dual boot?

Out of curiosity what are you running/planning to run? Running Arch on my dual boot here.

Because it’s much faster to ask here first, especially if you consider the fact that I’ll take three full days to download the game because my internet connexion is overexploited. There’s nothing wrong about asking the community first.

And I could run whatever comes in my mind, as long as it’s Linux compatible or I can find a way to make it work (like with the Wine software).

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with asking, wasn’t saying there was. Just that if you already had a linux system set up testing it might be quicker, clearly not the case here though.

To be honest, get another steam-/dirty-bomb-account for testing it with wine. Could start or the anticheat could instantly ban the account trying to do it (banned for using a 3rd party os  ), even if it would start.
But really, most times you hear or read from people trying to run ue3-stuff on linux/wine without changing the sources, it’s doesn’t seem to be running well, if it does at all.

Gosh, I totally forgot about the anticheat possibly banning me for using Wine. I definitely don’t want this to happen to me or my friend.

Gotta find something else of wait for a word from a staff member.

To be honest, since, on one side, the earliest unreal-engine natively? supporting linux would be ue4, the actual/newer than the dirty-bomb’s one, and this “new” anti-cheat on the other side, I’d doubt, there will be some version of Dirty Bomb beeing official “working on linux” soon… or ever.

UE 1,2 and 4 got full support for linux afaik.
3 I believe does have at least partial linux support in the later builds.

It’s too bad theres no support for linux, considering how Dirty bomb is the only game I personally am intrested in playing that doesn’t work on linux and now I’m forced to dualboot just because of it which is kind of frustrating.

This game refuses to load under Wine in Linux. I tried this a while back when Xigncode was still a thing and because of how the anticheat worked then it crashed when trying to load Xigncode. I haven’t tested with the new antivirus yet but even so I doubt it would work properly.

Don’t think it’s supported. It is only Windows supported as it says in the game. Btw Windows are the best. Don’t switch
so no more Windows dual boot
Why do you have dual boot anyways.

And I also want to know the specs from your current computer. And why do you prefer Linux over Windows? Just asking out of curiosity.

First : security reasons. Linux is far more safe than Windows when it’s about malwares and harmful programs. The reason is that Linux has an intelligent autorization system that can limit greatly the impact of a malware on your computer, and the other reason is that Linux is far, far less used than Windows, so creating viruses on Linux can be a waste of time. At the end, you may encounter a virus or two on Linux, but those are very uncommon and can be quickly handled.

Second : it’s a free operating system, supported by a whole community. So your “hotline” is also basically totally free.

Third : tons of free and open-source softwares ! Those are free, and are most of the time equally useful to the classic but expensive windows softwares you may find. They are also handled, set up to date and manipulated by whole communities that can help you for free. Of course you can also find those on Windows, but Linux will most of the time allow a greater choice of free softwares.

Of course there’s drawbacks to it : you may not be able to play the most recent games on Linux, and Linux may require you some knowledge in computer science.

While I am at it, if you want more arguments about why Linux is awesome : http://www.whylinuxisbetter.net/

I do have to say the Linux permissions system is amazing. I really wish Windows would adopt something a bit closer to it, even if it was optional.

Hey, Linux isn’t more secure than Windows, the “insert three letter here” check Windows on an interval, and if to many people know about the holes in the security, they tell their employees to fix it.
On Linux, (only?) the known bugs are fixed.

Nah, to be honest (as I wasn’t honest before…), a good linux simply is working more efficient, as it most of the times is a quite slim installation not having to care about everyone.
If you want something, you install it yourself, in contrast to windows, where you, with luck, are able to uninstall stuff, you don’t ever need.

Still, as most games run under linux probably best with steam-streaming, you need dualboot.

Well, fair enough. Everyone has their own opinions  .
And if you have a fair amount of money, I guess you’re good to go.
But I’d never had any viruses on my Windows computer. And Windows is really sexy
