Different Accents For Each Team?

I once got harassed by a British customs agent for referring to Britain as an island and Europe as the mainland. The customs lady was so pissed, and I couldn’t understand why it was such a serious insult to her. It was a strange experience. I was beginning to have visions of handcuffs and detainment, but after a few minutes of verbal abuse, she let me pass.

Later on the same trip, I asked a Cockney speaking hostess at our hotel for directions to a supermarket. After explaining to her what I meant by ‘supermarket’, she gave us some dodgy instructions, and told us to look for a “Zinesbry” store. Much to my surprise, it was actually a “Sainsbury” market. Crazy Cockney accents! We could barely communicate!

England, the land of adventure!

I’d hump her too.

I have slightly bizarre tendency to mimic people’s accents when talking to them, and I’ve been playing BC2 with a couple of Canucks the past few nights and have noticed my 'a’s getting longer. When I went on an exchange to trip to Germany years ago, I was speaking English with a ‘German trained to speak British English’ accent, and revert back to East Coast American when I went somewhere with the other exchange students.

When I was in UK, people thought I was Swiss because my “accent” was so neutral, mind you, the bartender at a pub in Norwich told me after ordering he didn’t get many Manitobans in his pub, that guy had a great ear
I exaggerate for effect. trying to point out how annoying it might be for americans if people thought that.

(and some people do funnily enough. My friend is CONVINCED Deliverance is a documentary of a typical day in america)
You might laugh but i live near where they filmed that, the river is called the chatooga its on the south carolina georgia border I live in south carolina anyway last summer myself and some friends actually floated that river on tubes, it was really a beautiful place and im glad we went all except the part where we got stuck on the river after dark because my wife and our friend failed to remember what it looked like where we were supposed to get out lol. I can tell you the thing about that being a documentary of daily american life is far from true as i was just as scared as any body from britain or anywhere woulda been after dark on a damn river thinkin ure gonna die and hearin dueling banjos and a voice in your head sayin squeal like a pig boy! squeal!!! lol. Assrape by hillbillys is not what i as an average amercian consider fun. But thanks for asking :stuck_out_tongue:

Haha that was a cool story. And i certainly didn’t mean any offence to americans by what i said. I was just trying to make an exaggerated point.

I work in a gift store and a lot of American tourists come in to have a look about. And I have to say americans are by far the nicest and friendliest people I’ve ever met.

oh hell no man i wasnt offended it takes a lot more than stuff people can type on a forum to offend me, no worries. I just wanted an excuse to tell that crazy story i guess lol it really was crazy there was even some real country sounding guy there though boiling peanuts in a tin can and we spent an hour in the dark trudging up a horse trail on his word that the trail lead somewhere. With our one light source a pen sized flashlight trudging up hill only to discover by some weird stroke of fate or god watching out for us we had come out excatly where our car was parked. The only problem was wed walked a long ways away from it because it was so dark at the time. We wouldntve even realized it then but there was a car driving on a road beside where we were hiking. Im glad that guy was there though if he hadntve had the fire going we wouldve floated past the tubing part of the river on into the real higher level rapids part where we couldve died. So im thankful . sorry not trying to derail the topic but u dont forget things like that and it does make for a hell of a story.

yeah… for me with tipping, average service gets 20% rounded to the next dollor so, a bill of $23.50 would mean $4.70 is 20% and i would round up to $5 and i would at the very least tip in cash whenever possible so they can claim on taxes that i tipped less. If i am dissatisfied with service, i would tip 15% so $3.60. If i am very happy with service I’ll add 1 or 2 $ onto the rounded 20% tip, so $6 or $7. And unless i am very dissatisfied with service, minimum tip is $3 for the table. so If i’m by myself, and the bill is $10, i’ll give $3 even though thats 30%.

You mustve not met some of the ones i know, ive met some rude ass people over here lol but im sure those people are everywhere. I think the problem with generelization as a whole is that people keep letting it happen. The key to overcoming it is exactly what were doing in this forum, were people from all different places and were discussing things. I think as time goes on and the internet gets older the sharing of ideas and knowledge will bring us together as a people and well realize what ive thought all along. People everywhere are generally the same, most of us are just trying to survive in a crazy world and do what we believe is right. To me that means respect for all people regardless of whether i agree or even like them, i can still respect them. Ive got friends from all over the world thanks to the net, ive got two very good friends over seas, one from hungary, one from sweden, Ive had friends over the years from britain, friends from china and japan,as well as one from mexico city. I guess i just love diversity in people and think thats what makes the world interesting. Its a product of our time though i guess. We live in a age of major changes. Even though im very negative at times i always believe in the positive potential of people as a whole and their propensity for change and adaptability. That gives me a lot of hope for the future. Sorry, damn im long winded lol. Btw this wasnt all a direct reply to what u said some of it was just a reply to the forum in general, sorry my minds very random at times.
