Did adding phantom make all other melee builds a lot worse?

(moonlitAbility) #1

so with phantom we got a merc that is meh to play as, and frustrating and unfun to play against. That wouldnt be so bad in and of itself, but looking back did this release ruin melee for every other merc? I have a melee heavy playstyle, and this bums me out for a lot of reasons.

Besides all the hitbox bullshit… they nerfed chopper, which affected everyone. but even worse than that (and i actually only recently learned this, which is partly why im posting), they nerfed the stilletto damage on stab to 85 from 90. this makes it by far the worst melee weapon in the game, and has no niche, etc. its worse than the beckhil in every way.

which means if you like to melee a lot, literally 1/3 of the loadouts for every merc (including phantom) are total trash.

but at least we have phantom?

The biggest issue is that they introduced the turn limited instead of reducing the attack frames of the Katana. So everyone got fucked over with melee because SD were too stupid to think of a proper fix to the beyblade issue.

LifeupOmega got it. They solved the melee issue the wrong way.
I use to like melee Phantom alot, but now the heavy swing is nearly useless as people just step out of the way like 80% of the time. Not to mention the delay on the swing is large enough that even if you did hit them they re still likely to kill you before you get another swing attempt.

I believe they nerfed it because of the Beyblade Mode exploit…

I’m not sure if there was more that influenced this change but I can honestly say I never once saw someone do this in game, so to completely change the way melee works as a whole do to one dumb exploit seems a bit silly.

While this video shows some highlights of dumb people running into the blade, in reality there were probably more fail attempts than successful ones. This is similar to saying 360 no scope is OP because you managed to get multiple successful attempts recorded with enough to make a video. The number of fails would show that this is not viable, and only good for a laugh.

They also reduced the active frames along with adding the turn limiter.

I think the Beyblade thing was a pretty stupid thing to try and fix, but if they really wanted to, then they should at least add a thrust or charge to the power swing of the Katana, so you can close the gap really quickly. He even has the animations for it for fucks sake.

The biggest issue was listening to people who couldn’t handle Phantom while releasing him as a too strong noobbasher-merc. SD made it too radical. In the beginning he was very strong, and of course people flamed on a gigantic level about him. He was too strong, but the nerfs were too strong, too. Now Phantom is nearly useless. I like playing him, but if I play him, I’m always one of the worst people in terms of points in a game even if I killed a lot of people. That’s his issue. He’s a killer. He’s a 1on1 killer. But this kind of mercs is nearly useless in the game.
And now SD nerfed him to oblivion. He has 0 use in teamplay and there are much better killer mercs, like Fragger.
plus, nerfing all other melee builds is a no-go and need to be changed in the furute along with making Phantom viable for the team again.
He could get an ability to disable things like the concussion grenade on shorter range.

i agree the turn limiter made it feel bleh. but that is just part of it IMO. does anyone else groan when they get stilleto loadouts now? i guess the chopper nerf doesnt functionally affect the range of one hits u can achieve (the 5 damage nerf does more).

stinks that they nerf a whole playstyle and gimp 1/3 of the loadouts for melee cause of one bad merc drop, thats still affecting shit months later… but hey, new audio is coming!

Some people still focus on him being a melee merc when it’s extremely obvious that SD does not want that in the game right now. He’s not melee he just gets more opportunities and has access to a katana instead of a cricket bat like other mercs. And even at launch he wasn’t at his best doing melee. So I am not sure why people are hung up on the turn limiter. And even then it still has more to do with the active frames being reduced by about a billion.
