Dedicated Servers: How?

(GlobalWar) #1

Been browsing the forums for about an hour and found various confirmations that there will be dedicated servers for Brink.

The question HOW this dedicated servers will become available still remains.

Will this be:
Dedicated from a selected group of GSP’s where we have to rent a server.
Dedicated from within Steam (like Half Life)
Serverfiles (Linux, Windows?) available for the public so anyone can host a server.

Can we host a server on a LAN where there is no Internet available?

Unbelievable isnt it?

The game is due in a month, but there is still no information about anything for PC’s

I’m looking at it as no news = good news, if it was going to be “Trusted Providers” it’s likely we would already have a list

I don’t have the perspective to make that kind of judgment. I’ve never been this focused on a yet to be released game before. And in the past I didn’t have as much knowledge as I do now. I would need to know examples of other devs/pubs/games’ methods for getting everyone situated with servers. When similar structured games were coming out how soon could everyone get a server going? Right now I’m assuming it’s normal to not know anything until the game is out. While everyone is still situating in the first week there’s time to learn how to get a server running. After a few months when the game is widespread the servers required will be ready.

The more threads on this the more likely someone from SD will notice the issue.

How was their last games did they release server files for past games? I’m just hoping they don’t restrict what gsp’s get the files and they give out the files to us so we can run our own server if we choose.

(Nail) #7

both previous games had user server files, both Linux and Windows but, that was with a different publisher

If there are no dedicated servers then I predict a riot.

(Avoc) #9

It would put the forums on the brink of chaos.

Indeed there would be much fallout and Splash Damage.
