Dedicated server for linux?

(nonoMapper) #1

I wonder if SD is considering making server binaries to host the game on linux servers.
…and to be honest, i play my games on windows.

I just know without talking numbers that a lot of people (including me) use a rented linux server.

So i would like to know if SD is thinking about this subject.

well if they dont, it wont be a game of any interest for me or the ppl i play with

only reason i got brink was because they said we would get them - as history shows - we didnt

UE3 has full GNU/Linux support, and even works on most portable OSs like Android.

(mitsuhiko) #4

It’s Linux, not GNU/Linux, as much as RMS wants it to be  UE3 does not have full Linux support unfortunately. There is a rather new port of some of the functionality of Unreal 3 to Linux but it’s barely a month old and not done by Epic but Ryan C. Gordon. Given the amount of code in Unreal overall I would not be surprised if that port was not complete.

(NeoRussia) #5

oh thanks for the indepth information! I also found the UE3 platform listing here http://www.unrealengine.com/platforms/

(loekino) #6

So why did they actually went for the UE? Id tech 5 seems to be quite nice or did mr. carmack not have faith in this one?

(SockDog) #7

Bethesda have said id Tech is now only for Bethesda products, it won’t be licensed to third parties or at least ones that aren’t published by Bethesda.

Given the choices UE seems about the best logical one as it’s the most mature and works across multiple platforms (remember that DB isn’t the only game SD is/will work on).

(jazevec) #8

In other words, a PC-only game Dirty Bomb uses Unreal Engine in part because UE is most multiplatform. Rad Soldiers being developed for mobile affects a PC-only game.

(SockDog) #9

AFAIK Rad Soldiers is developed with Unity.

The point here is what engine do you pick if you need to have your team trained and tools created knowing that you’ll be making games for PC and Consoles?

(jazevec) #10

Strange, I was unable to confirm it the last time I googled.

No linux dedicated means the same as it did for brink, not much clans would play it.
Most clans rents linux servers because they are cheaper and I think SD should really consider this for this game as I know we’re a lot of clan admins that actually cares about just this.
We in Pownedclan have dropped a heap of new games just because of this issue, we even tried to run brink windows server on wine and it wouldnt… just chrashed all the time so we dropped it.
And sorry to say but the same thing will happen to this without linux-dedi…

We have a few ET server online and would also host DB server.

(Dragonji) #13

UE probably has got much better netcode than id Tech

For a clan, it’s a good feeling when you can play on their server. Also for clanwars and training are important to your own server.

I suspect a F2P game they will be playing DB only after log in. This means that if there are files for a dedicated server, it must give the possibility for server admins to notify the server created in SD on. This could be achieved via the DB Page. If there is global stats, uniform server settings are important. This could be ensured by a verification by SD.
